"You have to try these lemon bars-" Gon began, but then realized his father was no longer sitting on the couch.
"Dad?" Gon called out. He knelt down to place the box of pastries on the coffee table, but something caught his eye. He picked up a piece of paper, and surveyed the messy handwriting.
'Sorry Gon, I gotta go. That gang on the TV was after me for trespassing, so I decided to stay here for a while. I didn't think they'd be caught so soon, so sorry I have to cut my visit short. Thanks for the fish, -Ging' the note read.
Gon held his breath, this couldn't be happening. This was some cruel joke right?
A knock was heard from the door, and Gon rushed to answer.
"Dad!" Gon exclaimed, swinging the door open, but the person he met eyes with was not his father. "Hey Gon... I just saw Ging run out, is everything ok-" but Killua stopped talking at the sight of tears running down Gon's cheeks.
"Gon..." Killua muttered, closing the door behind him. He wrapped his arms around Gon's neck, as Gon stifled his sobs into Killua's shoulder. "It's gonna be okay Gon..." Killua muttered, silently cursing the old man.
"W-we were supposed to go to the festival tonight...." Gon whispered, the feeling of barbed wire around his throat made it hard for him to speak. Killua hushed him, stroking his hair slowly.
Killua pulled away and met Gon's teary eyes. Killua put on the best fake smile he could muster, "Were gonna go to the festival tonight. Okay Gon?" Killua said, holding onto Gon's shoulder. Gon sniffled, and tried to calm his breathing.
Each exhale rattled, and he tried to clear his head from all of his thoughts. Gon slowly nodded, biting his bottom lip to hold anymore sobs. Killua wiped his thumb across Gon's cheek, clearing away his tears.
'Curse that old man. Curse him to hell.' were the only thoughts playing in Killua's mind, but he hid them. He was going to be there for Gon.
"Good." Killua whispered, cupping Gon's cheeks. Gon looked down, bringing Killua's attention to the note he was holding. He took the note from Gon's hands, and read over it. He clenched his teeth, trying to resist the urge to punch a hole in the wall.
"Killua..." Gon whimpered, bringing Killua's attention back to Gon. "Don't leave me okay..." Gon choked, immediately bringing a hand to his mouth to hold back his tears.
Killua threw the note to the floor to embrace Gon, digging his face into the crook of his neck. "Never. I promise." Killua whispered.
The commotion of people echoed around the two boys, as they walked aimlessly around the festival. Killua glanced at Gon who walked beside him. Gon's face was filled with wonder because of all the chaos surrounding them, but his eyes held sadness.
Killua hated Ging, he hated him with every bone in his body. But if Killua asked Gon if he hated Ging, he knows exactly what answer he would receive. The words, "No not at all" looped in his head, from the last time he asked.
A booth caught Killua's eye, there were candy apples placed on multiple shelves. He looked back at Gon, and Gon seemed to be looking at the same booth. "Wanna get candy apples?" Killua asked. Gon glanced at Killua, "Sure." he said, with a small smile.
"Two candy apples please." Killua told the worker, holding up two fingers. The worker nodded, "Coming right up." He turned back around and handed Gon the two treats, and took the money from Killua.
"Thank you." Gon said, surveying the glossy sugar coating. Killua took one of the candy apples from Gon, giving it a lick.
He peered back up at Gon, who had his eyes on something else. Killua traced the area to see what he had his eyes on, and found his way to a jumbo white cat plushie.
