+L I A
The day the wall of X's reached three hundred and ninety nine, Rachel locked us in a room with nothing but two metal chairs.
The emptiness was slightly comforting, especially since every other time we'd been locked in here there had been a knife involved. Unfortunately, I'd seen what chairs could do to people, especially metal ones.
Trevor knocked his shoulder against mine lightly.
"Are you okay?" He asked, finishing his food they'd given him. Nothing more than a sandwich and an expired milk. Yum.
I slumped down in the chair. "I guess."
He sighed, avoiding my eyes.
"Don't lie, I can tell you aren't."
"And how can you do that?"
"You tell me, I learned from you." He paused. "So are you going to tell me what it is?"
"I'm not. Do you want to know what you're going to do?"
Trevor scowled.
"What?"
"You're going to leave me alone."
He rolled his eyes and looked away, shoulders slumping in defeat. The medical part of me wanted to tell him what I was about to do - he deserved to know, didn't he? Didn't he deserve to know that I was going to leave him alone? But the other part of me knew he would argue, and I didn't have a very good argument.
Instead I leaned over and put a hand on his shoulder.
"You smell like garbage," I said, nodding at the bloodstains on his t-shirt
He looked up and laughed lightly.
"Like you smell any better.
The door swung open at that moment, and a woman entered.
A woman I had never seen before.
"Five minutes," she said.
"Great," I muttered.
She walk out and slammed the door behind her. Slowly standing up, I headed over to the wall.
"One more line," I whispered.
"One more line for what?" Trevor asked from behind me. I sighed internally.
"The uh... wall thing."
But I couldn't do it. I couldn't lie to him. I've lied way too many times to him, I just couldn't do it again.
I drew the last line on the wall.
"I started drawing the lines on the wall the day you guys got here, remember?" He nodded. "Well, I made a promise to myself that the day the wall reached four hundred x's, I would-"
Trevor interrupted.
"Lia, no."
"Well what else am I going to do?"
He fumbled to grab my wrists, shaking his head. His eyes were wide. I almost felt bad, but then... No. I had to.
"Lia, you can't. Please don't. I can't..." He sighed, and a tear rolled down his cheek.
"I need to, Trevor. Do you not understand that? I can't stand watching these guys hurt you. And now that Keagan and Brian are gone, it's easier." I sighed and tried to pull my wrists back. "I'll stay long enough to make sure they don't kill you, and then I'll do it. Okay?"
Trevor tried to answer, but the new woman came back into the room. She didn't say a thing, just nodded in the direction of the room. Trevor refused to let go of my wrists as we walked into the torture room. Entering it was so much different than it had been the nearly four hundred times we'd done it. Almost peaceful. Now that I knew I was going to die.
The woman opened the closet and took out a knife.
"Don't move," she warned. She closed the door, being sure to lock it behind her.
I succeeded in prying my wrists away from Trevor and walked over the the closet, taking out the smallest knife. Big enough to slit my throat.
"Lia," Trevor started. "Don't do this. Please."
When I didn't answer, he grabbed a knife from the shelf next to mine.
"What are you doing?" I asked. My heart began to race.
"If you cut yours, I'll cut mine."
"What? No! Trevor, are you crazy?"
He grabbed my wrist with his free hand, putting the knife to his throat with the other.
"Promise me you won't do it and I'll put the knife down."
"I can't." Tears gathered in my eyes and I tried to jerk the knife away from him. My efforts were useless; he'd always been stronger than I was.
"I won't do it if you don't, Lia. Promise me."
"I can't do it."
"Fine." He took a deep breath, smiling at me through teary eyes. "I'll see you on the other end, then."
The knife swiped across his neck, and he tumbled forwards.
(Well first of all,
fuck you, Mai.
