I laid down in bed, alone. It was scarily quiet. I reached over and turned the fan on. I don’t know how I was going to be able to fall asleep. Yenzo was sleeping in the guest room with the kids.
Were Timber and Speckle asleep?I know Noah went out to spend the night at his girlfriend’s house, Robin. So he wasn’t even here.
I got up, walking out the room. My kids had a murderer for a father. Timber was barely twelve.
Corpse Nicholai was right, even though I hated to admit it. I was a terrible example.I walked out into the hallway and opened Timber’s bedroom door. She was sound asleep. Good, because she has school in the morning. I checked on Speckle. He was asleep as well.
Did I work tomorrow?
I scratched the back of my head and walked downstairs. I checked the calendar. It was Thursday. I didn’t work tomorrow.Thank god.
Now I have more time to come up with an excuse.
I walked back upstairs, blind from exhaustion. I collapsed down on the bed in the room and fell asleep.
____________I snorted as the sound of my phone ringing woke me up. I reached over for it on the small table beside the bed. Light seeped through the windows. What time was it?
I twisted and looked at the clock. It was seven. I heard plates clattering against each other downstairs. I looked back at my phone.
It was Star calling me. I answered.“Is it important?” I grumbled.
“Randal wants you to check in. He wants to know what the witness said.” Star said. “Sorry, man. I know how hard it is to wake up this early.”
“Yeah, sure.” I growled. “Tell him I will be there at ten.”
“Okay.” Star said. “Bye.”
“Bye.” I said and immediately hung up.
I almost fell out of bed trying to get up quickly. I opened the bedroom door and practically ran down the stairs.
God, Yenzo! Don’t let them go in the backyard! I almost screamed out loud.I jumped off the last two steps. Timber and Speckle were sitting at the table, eating breakfast. Yenzo jumped as he saw me. “God, I didn’t know you turned into Noah.” He said.
Okay, good. I casually walked over to the back door and closed the curtains. I turned. Timber and Speckle were paying no attention to me, luckily. Yenzo stared at me with a knowing look and turned again.
I walked over to him. Yenzo’s eyes followed me as I got closer to him. “Where’s those kids?” I hissed into his ear.
“The room. No, they didn’t meet them yet.” Yenzo whispered back.
“Good.” I whispered. “Are they locked in there?”
“Why would I lock them in there? There’s no way for them to open the windows in there and I would see them if they came down.” Yenzo whispered.
“Okay. Whatever.” I scoffed and walked away from him. Yenzo looked like he wanted to erupt in anger and argue, but he probably didn’t want to talk about it in front of the kids.
I sat down on a stool. “Randal wants me to go in today.”“Why?” Yenzo asked. I stared at him through slitted eyelids. “Oh.” He said.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Timber look over her shoulder. I looked at her with a small smile. She turned again.
I looked back at Yenzo with a frown.“I’m leaving at ten.” I said.
“You won’t be there all day again, right?” Yenzo asked. “I go back tomorrow. I hate when you aren’t here.”
“I’ll be back as soon as I can.” I said. Yenzo looked relieved. “Are you taking them?” I looked at the kids.
“Yeah.” Yenzo said.
“K.” I said. “I need to… go dress out of this horrible suit.” I grumbled.
I didn’t end up changing last night. I might have been able to if I didn’t kill a guy and throw his kids in the back seat of my car.
I got up and ran upstairs. I needed to buy another suit, because now this one might not have enough time to dry and I would be wearing a wet suit to work.
I chose a regular outfit and walked in the bathroom, dressing out of the suit and putting the new clothes on. I walked downstairs and opened the door into the basement. I walked into the laundry room and threw my suit into the washer machine, putting soap in after and closing it.
After I started the washer machine, I ran back upstairs.Timber and Speckle were sitting on the couch with their backpacks. I heard the keys jingle and Yenzo walked out from the kitchen.
“Come on.” He leaned against the wall, looking at the kids with a soft smile. “Say goodbye to dad.”
Timber and Speckle jumped up from the couch. They both hugged me damn near at the same time. I bent over.
“Bye. I love you. Have a good day at school.” I said. I kissed both of them on the top of the head.
“Bye, dad!” Timber ran over to Yenzo. Speckle followed in silence. Yenzo nodded at me and he walked out of view.
I heard the front door open then shut again. I immediately ran out into the backyard. The hole I dug was still uncovered. Thank god the kids didn’t see that.
They would most likely go outside and investigate. Then find a dead guy and pass out.I heard the car start and through the cracks in the fence, I saw the car drive off.
I walked through the door leading to the garage and grabbed the shovel. It didn’t rain, so it wouldn’t be such a pain to put the dirt back. I dragged the shovel out and stood at the edge of the hole.
Nicholai was laying down awkwardly. It was hard to tell how he died, since his head was laying down strangely. His eyes were rolled back in his head and he looked even more dead.
I have seen a dead body that’s been sitting for a few hours. It wasn’t a pleasant sight. Nicholai’s body was going through that process now.
