I stuck the shovel in the loose dirt, kicking it down with my foot. I shoveled a pile of dirt into the hole. Nicholai’s words from last night still came back to torture me.
“Take care of my kids, Dark.” Was probably the one that stuck with me most.
They were my kids now, then?
He wanted me to take care of them?
Did he not have a significant other that was probably away at the time?Probably not, if he told me that. But maybe it was just a hallucination. I was very tired. I didn’t know anything. I just knew about this guy’s fucking employment and other useless information.
They added all that shit, but not that he had kids. His neighbors were going to notice nothing was happening. His boss was going to have so many suspicions. But the kids. If they knew he had kids, which they probably did. They would be looking for them out of all. This wasn’t the city. The kids wouldn’t be hard to miss.I’m a cop. I can cover it up. I can. This is fine. Yenzo can help, he’s a cop too.
I was almost done covering up the hole. I couldn’t see Nicholai at this point. I eventually finished and sighed. My muscles already were aching. I looked a little to the right. Grass was growing still where I buried the last person. Marble.
That bitch deserved it. No one manipulates my children. Especially not my youngest daughter.I carried the shovel back in the garage. I grabbed the big bag of grass seeds and carried it out. Yenzo usually did this for me, but he wouldn’t be back for another thirty minutes because of how far away the school was. And I’m an impatient bitch.
I grabbed a handful of seeds, scattering them across the dirt. I stopped scattering seeds after the whole area looked like it was covered in tiny green spots. I brought the bag back to the garage and I grabbed the end of the hose.
I turned it on barely, so it wasn’t splattering everywhere like a fucking fire hose. I watered the dirt casually, like there definitely wasn’t a dead person about a foot under the dirt.I heard a car pass but I ignored it. I continued to water the ground until it was soaked. I decided to let the hose lay down in the garden bed.
I wasn’t the type of person to care about gardens, but I guess they were pretty.
Yenzo loved them. He didn’t plant anything edible, but he loved flowers, so he planted a lot of those.I heard the sliding door open and I jumped. I looked over. Noah was standing there. He stared at me.
“Yenzo?” He squinted his eyes as he stared at me. “I’m just kidding.” He grinned.
I kept a straight face. Noah walked out but his smile faded when he looked over at the tree. He looked at me with an awkward smile.
“Don’t question it.” I said, looking down at the flowers.
“Who was it?” Noah asked.
“I think Yenzo should plant more of these.” I said, trying to change the subject.
“Dark!” Noah raised his voice.
“Some guy.” I said.
“What do you mean ‘some guy’? So you are just kill-“
I had to smack him. He was talking way too loudly for my liking. I grabbed his shirt collar and dragged him into the house.
“Good god.” Noah hissed.
“I lost my shit, okay? I killed someone while trying to question them for a murder investigation.” I said.
“Ironic!” Noah growled. “I’d call Randal if you wouldn’t kill me and make my grave right next to the others!”
“You wouldn’t!” I growled quietly.
Noah’s expression changed.
“You’re right, I wouldn’t.” He said. He turned and looked out the window. He just stared for a second. “So what was it about this one?” He asked.
“He had kids.” I said. Noah looked at me over his shoulder.
“God, you didn’t kill him right in front of them, right?” Noah asked.
“Uhmmm…” I whispered. “About… that…” I muttered. Noah stared at me. How do I phrase this without sounding like an actual psycho? Fuck it. I’m a literal psycho, I need to stop trying to hide it.
“Dark?” Noah glared at me. “The kids?”
“They kind of saw me shoot their dad.” I shrugged.
“Where are they now? Not home?” Noah asked.
“They are here actually. No big deal.” I said casually.
“NO BIG DEAL!?” Noah repeated. “DARK!”
“SHUT UP!” I growled.
“Okay, okay…” Noah slapped the pockets off his jeans. “So what is going to happen?”
“We will figure it out.” I said, walking past him and walking back outside.
I turned the water off and walked back in. I closed the door and closed the curtains.
“I need to go to the police station later on. Probably won’t be there for very long. Hopefully.”
“You’re fucking crazy.” Noah scoffed and walked passed me.
“Don’t go into the guest bedroom!” I called as Noah went up the stairs.
“Sure.” Noah said. I watched him go into his own bedroom and close the door.
His lazy ass didn’t work for three days of the week, and today was one of those days. He was probably going to watch TV or something.I just sat down on the couch, waiting for Yenzo to come home.
