Over the next two months of summer Wyatt and I got closer. We hung out at least three times a week and just talked or hung out. We went swimming a few times and each time I had to stop myself from staring at his bare chest. We continued playing our game of chase but it had evolved more into tag. Since he knew I was a vampire I was able to show my real appearance when we hung out. Fangs and all. I woke up and dropped down to the ground. I looked into the mirror at my faint reflection and smiled. I wonder. I focused really hard but nothing happened. Oh, c'mon, what do I have to do? I sighed and got dressed, thinking maybe that might help.Once I was dressed I ran through the tunnels of the cave system. Maybe I can trigger it. I ran to the nearest cliff and didn't think about it before I jumped. I was too far from the ledge to grab on and there was no way to make a soft landing and I knew this. My instincts kicked in as I started falling and I could feel my bones rearranging. It wasn't painful and the transformation was instantaneous. I moved my arms up and down as they became wings and my fall decreased. Yes! I flapped harder and soared upward. Yes, yes, yes! I cheered in my head as I flew back towards my room. I landed on my desk and looked into the mirror. My reflection stared back at me but instead of a teenage brunette with grey-blue eyes it showed a small brown bat with red eyes stared back.
Finally! See, when a vampire turns sixteen they get their full powers. For most it was the ability to transform into bats and back and when even earned tattoos to symbolize our 'coming of age'. I transformed back into my human form and checked all over my body for the tattoo. I finally found it on my left wrist and I smiled as I inspected it. A faint orange fade to black crescent moon mark.
