I woke up at 8:30 Monday morning and leisurely made my way to the living room, still in my pajamas. Vio was sitting on the couch, reading a book.
"Oh," he said, "Good morning. Don't you have school today? Are you feeling ill?"
"Oh, no, I'm fine," I said with a smile. "Today is Veterans Day, so we have the day off."
Red was on the floor playing with the dog, and looked up to ask, "What's Veterans Day?"
"Well, in this land we use Veterans Day as a day to celebrate and remember all the soldiers who fought for us," I explained. "You would call them knights."
"Ooooohh, okay," he said, much less confused.
Vio looked up from his book. "In Hyrule we have a three-day festival called the Knights Festival. It sounds very similar to Veterans Day."
"Interesting," I said. "Veterans Day here is only one day, but we get the day off from school, which is good. And now I get to spend an extra day with you guys!" I said cheerily, ruffling Red's hair. "Anyway, do you guys want some coffee? I'm making some for myself."
They both said yes, so I went over to the kitchen and set up the coffee maker. I made enough for all six of us, just in case, and sat down on the couch for a little while, enjoying the silence. As if on cue, the coffee maker beeped and Green walked out of his room.
"Hey, (y/n)," he said, surprised to see me. "Don't you have school today?"
I laughed a little to myself and said aloud, "I guess I'll have to have this conversation with all of them today!" But Vio explained simply for me.
"Today in this world, is Veterans Day," he explained. "It's like the Knights Festival."
"Oh, okay," he said and sat down. "What are we gonna do today then?"
"Hmm..." I thought for a moment. "Well, unless you know a war veteran, nobody really does much. Memorial Day -- the day we honor the dead knights -- is the day when people have luncheons and visit cemeteries and stuff."
Green nodded. "Do you know anybody who was a knight?"
"Well actually we call them soldiers here, but yes, I do. My grandfather was in a war, as well as my great uncle. Other than that, I'm not sure. My uncle lives in a different state -- you call them provinces -- and my grandpa lives relatively close by. But my grandparents do most celebrating on Memorial Day. They'll probably just go out to lunch today."
"Oh, cool," he replied.
I got up, served our coffee, and sat down again. Blue came out a few minutes later, still half asleep, and plopped down on the couch beside me. "'Sup," he said plainly. He sat there staring at the wall for a couple minutes, then looked at me. "Wait, what are you doing here?"
"I have the day off from school," I told him. "Today is Veterans Day. Sort of like the Knights Festival."
"Hm. Cool."
"Yeah... What do you want to do today?" I asked him.
"I dunno," he replied simply.
"Well... What do you guys normally do when I'm at school?" I asked, addressing all of them.
"Hmm..." Blue thought for a moment. "I usually watch TV, Vio reads, Red does something stupid, Shadow stays in his cave, and Green spends most of his time outside."
"Hey, I'm not stupid...!" Red objected, his face growing sad.
Blue looked over at Red. "Yes you are. Anyway, why do you ask?"
