"Dad! We have no food in the fridge, we have to go to the store later." I yell at my dad, hoping he can hear me from his room.
"Yes we do!" He tells back at me, and I can tell I just woke him up.
"No, we don't! All we have are your beers and some expired bologna!" I yell back at him. I hear him grumble and his door, and I see his bright blonde head of hair walking down the hallway. He comes up to the fridge and looks in it.
"We still have enough for breakfast." He says to me, "Want some bologna?"
"Some expired bologna, you mean?" I question with a quirked eyebrow.
"Expiration dates are just suggestions, plus, it'll help with your immune system." He says in response.
"Fine, but we need to go to the store soon okay?" I tell him and he nods and starts to fry some bologna.
Once he's done, he puts the plates on the table and turns the TV on. We eat in silence for a while, the only sound we make is the prominent sounds of us chewing. Once we both finish I take our plates and put them in the sink. This is how most mornings go, but it's not all bad I guess.
"I gotta get ready for work." He says as he walks back to his room. I sit back down on the couch and watch TV. I see him come out of his room, ready for work now. He grabs his toolbox and the bag of trash and walks to the door. Before he walks out he briefly turns to me.
"Goodbye Cass, love you." He says to me.
"Love ya too." I say back, and with that he turns and leaves the apartment. Not long after he walks outside, I hear him talking to someone. Confused, because he doesn't have friends, I walk outside too.
I walk over to the dumpster where I here the voices coming from and see a boy, probably about my age, talking to my dad.
"... bottles go in the blue bins." I hear the last part of what the boy is saying, and I quietly laugh to myself, knowing my dad won't listen. But because I made a noise, they both look at me.
"Hi, I'm Miguel." The boy says, "I live in 109."
"Hi, I'm Cassie, I live with my dear old dad in 106." I say, motioning to my dad.
"Listen, Menudo," My dad says to the boy, making me shove his arm and give him a look which he ignores, "We've lived in this shithole for my daughter's whole life. The pipes don't work. The fountain's full of piss. The only good thing here is that I don't have to talk to anyone I don't live with. So, nice knowing you." Dad says, grabbing his toolbox from the ground and walking away.
"Ok well... have a nice day I guess." Miguel says to my dad as he gets in the car and drives away.
"Sorry, he can be an asshole." I say with a laugh. Miguel laughs a little too.
"Ok well, I'm going to go back to my apartment but just knock on the door if you ever want to hang out." I say with a smile.
"Will do, bye Cassie." He says to me. I wave and walk back into my apartment.
