but declared me ineligible worthy of the affection of a detestable simpleton and no one else. Tell me, what others should ever want
such damaged goods now?" Daphne raged, finding herself pace back and forth around the room in complete frustration. Her mother was no where near insight, she was spending quality time with Hyacinth and Gregory as Francesca had been sent away to her aunts to perfect her pianoforte this season.
"You speak as if Lady Whistledown were to be held in higher regard than Her Majesty the Queen herself. You give far too much credit
to some anonymous scribbler. These musings, they're not true." Anthony stood, professing his case to his two sisters was tiring and confusing. He was trying to be the man of the house but it seemed he couldn't do anything right."Only they are true, Brother,
and they are true because of you." Calista caused a stir in the atmosphere in the room, constantly sticking her nose only business which only annoyed Anthony more."You have managed to scare every worthy suitor away." Daphne raised her timid voice, feeling as though she was about to explode with anger at any given moment.
"Whistledown has merely reported it. I am looking out for you. I am protecting you. It is my duty." He argued.
"And what of my duty? You have no idea what it is to be a woman, what it might feel like to have one's entire life reduced to a single moment. This is all I have been raised for. This is all I am. I have no other value. If I am unable to find a husband, I shall be worthless." Daphne almost shed a tear, society was not kind to girls, they were to live a lie of a life until the a day a suitor comes along and hopefully sweeps them off their feet.
"Daphne, you're a Bridgerton."
"It would be easier if we were not." Calista agreed with her sister. She was not fond of society ripping them to shreds at the least information of a scandal. Woman were almost treated like objects in a sense. She hated it, she hated how she could not show the world the real her but she would never reveal her true self.
"You could have stayed in the countryside, Calista. You could have left everything behind you but yet, you promised father. You promised you would never embarrass our family name and you have done just that. Father would be disgraced how you've turned out."
She approached her brother, standing extremely close to his face when anger lashed out in a venomous tone. She would not tolerate this behaviour constantly being addressed to her in a manner that she was left to feel disgusted.
"How dare you speak to me like that. You continue to fuck your precious opera singer in the shadows of night. Yes, Anthony- you might know my secrets but do not forget, I know yours too. Deal with it."
She nudged passed his figure, letting her shoulder abruptly brush Anthony's, enrage filled her soul as she shook her head with disbelief. She need to relieve some stress in the only form she knew how.
Sex.
"My dearest readers,
Ambitious mamas rejoice, for the new Duke of Hastings continue to grace our fair city with his presence. And, oh, what an impressive presence it is! It should be noted that the duke has been overheard announcing to mamas everywhere that he has no plans of ever marrying. This author wonders which brazen matchmaker shall rise to such a challenge, for this competition is well underway.
Kind regards,
Lady Whistledown"
