CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: Reassurance.
Natalie Cross
No excitement rushed over me as I sat on the windowsill with my sketch pad on my leg. I haven’t drawn something in a while and the first piece I did draw was Nate’s face. My heart ached as the rain finally fell from the sky making the scene more depressing outside. We lived in the most hidden place that it saddens me that I don’t see people, but the golden gates from a far. I saw a car pull up, an all too familiar car. I felt like I haven’t seen my best friend in a while.
Talia wore a black with studded buttons on the side by Ployy, a vintage looking skirt from H&M, black pumps, and lace gloves. She looked like she was going to a funeral, but in style. I looked foolish as I walked over in my purple, silk slip-on. Marie opened the door for her as she rushed on over to give me a hug. “Oh, how I’ve missed you.” She murmured and it was true. Even if it has only been a day, I feel as if it was a whole century.
We settled in the patio with our puffy jackets I supplied and sipped tea while munching on blueberry muffins. It’s weird for Talia to be here on a weekend when I was usually at her house when I needed to be, but somehow I couldn’t even bring myself out of the house. She knew something was wrong with me as she bit down her muffin. “Honestly Natalie, what’s been going on with you? I’ve been calling and you haven’t been answering. I’ve been worried sick for you.” Talia had somewhat a mixture of a British accent, but the Connecticut slang has already got to her.
“Just the usual, boring boy drama,” Did I really want to fill her in on the Ex brothers drama?
“I’m here to listen away. Besides Sam’s been MIA. I’m also worried about her.” She put it, but she set down her tea, crossed her legs, and looked at me. It was obvious she wanted to me to start filling her in. I took one last bite of my muffin and began telling her. Without a doubt she seemed really interested and added every advice on boys she could have given. “Wow, so Nico finally got the love bug, and he decided to pick on his little brother’s girlfriend. Tres impressive Nico,” I rolled my eyes.
“I love Nate.” I stated.
“I know you do, it’s just quite amazing how Nic finally found someone.” She said.
“Why couldn’t it be someone else? Maybe someone his own age,” I added grumpily. I stared at the miniscule view of Sherman Oaks; somehow it seemed bleak now that it was raining. It looked unattractive. I knew Talia wanted to give me some space so she decided to shut up for a while. I hope she knows that I loved her and one of these days I need to thank her fully, not conversationally. I decided I didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Besides, she already got it out of me; I don’t want to linger on it much longer. “What’s going on with you?” Her smile stretched as her cheeks flushed. Here we go again.
“Well, Nat. I think I like somebody.” She added. It’s been a while since Talia actually got over somebody. Sam and I knew how much Chris hurt her. She actually loved that tool, always wondered why, but never bothered asking. I heard he moved from Sherman Heights. I’m glad we gave him a good scare. “Randy.” She stated. So Talia finally like Randy. We gushed for about twenty minutes straight on how perfect he is and how much he liked Talia. Randy has like Talia for the longest time and he only had his eyes set on her. Even though he was a deviant type for Talia he was willing to risk it all.
“It finally happened.” I added taking the last sips of my tea.
“Nothing’s happened. He still has his freshman girlfriend. It’s just he’s different when he’s with me. I could be myself with him. I know I probably said that with Chris too, but it’s Randy, something about him that I sense that he truly cared for me.” She explained. It looked like she was drifting to space as she smiled to herself. Her brown eyes were practically melting. I knew how she was feeling, the way you know that the person loves you is when he actually looked at you the way you wanted him to.
