CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: The Same Darkness that was my Happy Place.
Natalie Cross
Talia, Samantha, and I reached the lunch area and there were still that eerie silence, but my mind was too filled with accounts of what just happened. I had to tell the girls what just happened, but would it really be worth it while everybody was going through a tough time. We all sat down as the boys were talking amongst each other. The table seemed to have a permanent seating arrangement as Samantha sat away from Jason, Randy sat closer to Talia, Trick sat closer to Sam, Nate and Justin sat remotely far from each other. I suddenly remembered what happened before the soccer game.
I suddenly couldn’t breathe as I knew the surroundings were all too complex for me. It’s as if everybody here had a distant secret that we all knew about, but just afraid to say. The silence over took the table. Sam stood up and walked over to Jason’s side of the table. “Here, thank you for the unbearable good memories.” She said sarcastically. Her voice broke the silence, but somehow it still lingered there.
Jason rolled his eyes and shoved it back into his pocket. Justin then broke the silence.
“Can someone please tell me why Nathaniel is being an ass?” he asked as he set down his food. Nate looked up and his golden hair shaved into somewhat more manly. My heart wilted as I remembered that he was the one who saved me in my night of distraught, but how come he hasn’t fought for me as much as Hunter and Justin did? Nate didn’t say anything and continued reading his book.
“Quit it guys, you’re attracting attention.” Cruise interrupted.
“I’m not going to stop until this tweak tells me what’s going on in his little perfect world.” Justin demanded as his yellow tinted eyes grew larger and angrier. Nate stood up and his nostrils flared. Everybody watched what was going on and even Talia seemed to be interested. Leave it to her to have dramatic scenes as her guilty pleasure. “What the hell was that stunt you pulled at the game, Ex.” Justin spat.
“What the hell was yours?” Nate’s voice thundered.
“Last time I checked I didn’t get punched on the face by my own teammate, by my own friend.” He looked sad, a deep agonizing look in his eyes. Nate breathed loudly in exasperation.
“Do you really want me to tell you right now what the hell you did?” Nate yelled.
“Yes, so we can finally get this out of the way.”
“You kissed her okay? You kissed Natalie when I told you to back off her. I told you,” he looked at me as his cheeks were beginning to flush. Everybody had their eyes on me. I was ready to bolt out the door. “I loved her, but you returned the favour by kissing her.” He kept explaining as tears began to form under his eyes.
“You weren’t supposed to be there,” Justin whispered. Everybody looked at what was happening. Why did everything have to happen in public? I felt self-conscious and I tried to look away from the interested stares. I was ready to run away, to run somewhere.
“I wasn’t supposed to? So you could kiss the girl I love?” He still began to talk.
“I love her too.” Justin said softly. I stood up and smacked the table and it shook. They all looked at me confusingly as my breaths were getting heavier and faster. I was angry. This was embarrassing, this was immaturity.
“You guys are really something. Can you stop thinking about yourselves for a minute and look around you? There are people here that are listening into things that should be set in clandestine matter. Think about my feelings for a change and see how upsetting this whole thing is for me. This is beyond immaturity.” I felt Talia’s hand grab mine, but not to sit me down, but in a way to hold me in a supportive matter.
