*Author's Note: This is a cute Newt imagine that I thought up. Not much to it, so I hope you like it!*
They stared up at the night sky, watching the twinkling stars dance above. Newt was to the left of Emily and she basked in the warmth radiating off of his body. It was almost regular for them to come here once everyone else was asleep. They had spent hours in this clearing, mostly talking or gazing at the sky, like they were right now. They were pretty sure no one else in the Glade knew about their nightly adventures and they liked it that way.
Tonight Newt's stomach felt queasy and he was very aware of the mere inches that sat between them. He had been trying to convince himself for the past half an hour to start talking. Emily laid on the ground, clueless at the mental torment Newt was going through. She was thinking about what she saw earlier that day when she was running the Maze. There had been two beetleblades sitting next to each other on the wall, which wasn't that unusual, but they were bumping heads, which had peaked her interest.
Newt finally cleared his throat and said in a gravelly voice, "Do you remember when we had that mud fight?"
Emily let out a laugh as she thought back to the day when she was working in the Gardens with Newt and they had started throwing mud at each other. They had been so dirty that Mike, Keeper of the Sloppers, wouldn't let them come into the bathrooms until they had hosed off outside.
"Do you remember when we started a fire in the kitchen?" Emily laughed.
Newt grinned and elbowed her in the side, "What do you mean we? I had nothing to do with that!" He clearly remembered Emily saying that she was going to make him a fried egg and then yelled for him five minutes later when the egg had caught on fire.
Newt snorted and they both burst out laughing even harder. He was overjoyed, this was going even better than he had hoped.
"You remember when you were a Greenie and had to try being a Slicer?" Newt asked.
Emily sat up, brighter red than a tomato and slapped his arm, "I told you to not to talk about that!"
He grinned and sat up with her, "You vomited all over the pig you were supposed to be slaughtering with Winston!"
"It was disgusting!"
They were both racked with laughter and were having trouble breathing.
Emily gasped out, "Well, remember when you fell back into the Box after helping the Greenie out?" Emily started giggling even harder and Newt laughed along with her, although a bit embarrassed. He remembered that awful day almost too well.
Newt's grin stretched from ear to ear as he thought of another story, "What about when you got so drunk at one of the bonfires that you couldn't even walk to your bloody bed?"
Emily snorted and pushed Newt in the shoulder, "You had to carry me and I kept insisting that I wasn't drunk and I could walk!" Newt smiled at the memory of Emily in his arms.
Their laughter quieted down until they were just left with broad smiles and Newt's gut clenched. He knew it was time.
"Emily," he said.
"Yeah?"
He watched the moonlight reflect off of her silky hair. "I want you to know that, er," Newt broke off and looked at the ground. He took a deep breath and tried again.
"Emily, you are the most amazing person I have ever met." He tried to stop thinking and just let his heart talk, "You bring out the best in me and I hope I do the same for you. You make me so happy I can't even begin to describe it. I've felt this for a long time and I want you to know,"
He looked away from the ground and into her eyes, painfully aware of the butterflies bouncing around in his stomach. "I like you Emily. And I was, um, wondering if you would want to be my girlfriend?"
Emily was taken off guard. Of course she had thought of Newt in that way, but never actually thought he would ever feel the same way. She had told herself for the better part of the two years they had been in the Maze that it would never happen. Yet here he was in front of her, saying that he liked her.
Newt was watching her face, scrutinizing every detail. He worried he had been too upfront or seemed too clingy. He whispered, "It's okay if you don't feel the same way."
She shook her head, eyes wide. "No, it's not that, its um," Emily didn't know what to say.
She took a shallow breath and rushed out the words, "I like you too."
Newt's stomach did a somersault and he felt ecstatic. Emily thought she should say something more, Newt had been so open and honest.
Throughout the conversation they had been subconsciously leaning closer and closer to each other and now they were almost face to face. Newt's heart skipped a beat as he closed the gap and they kissed.
It was short and sweet but laced with emotion. From what they could remember it was each of their first kisses and they both felt exhilarated and slightly breathless.
Emily realized she hadn't answered his question. "I would love to be your girlfriend," she whispered. They kissed again for a little longer this time and when they pulled away they were both wearing huge smiles.
