I sat in McCormick's pub, tapping my foot as I waited impatiently for my parents to arrive. Draco was looking around the room in awe, taking it all in. Apparently, he had only been into the muggle world a few times before this and still wasn't used to the whole thing.
"They should be here already," I said as I glanced at my watch and saw that it read 8:10 pm. They're never late, which means that either something bad happened to them or that they've decided they would rather not go out to dinner with their only child.
Draco turned to me and raised an eyebrow. "I really doubt your parents will be like those assholes that never show up to a dinner they had planned just because they don't want to go, relax Hermione," Draco said, wrapping one of his arms around my waist in a comforting gesture.
"I know that deep down, but I'm also worried something bad could have happened and that's why they aren't here yet," I supplied and just as the words left my mouth I heard my name called and turned to see my mum. She was waving at me from the door of the restaurant and the minute I saw her a smile spread across her face and she began to walk toward the table, my father walking closely behind her looking equally as happy.
"Hermione, honey, how have you been? It's been so long since we last had a family dinner," she said and gave me a look of approval when she saw Draco.
"I've been good, how have you two been?" I asked. They both responded good with their eyes on Draco as if he were the most fascinating thing on the Earth. Granted, I haven't introduced them to any of my boyfriends before, and although Draco isn't technically my boyfriend yet, he is the first boy that I'm introducing to my parents. "Mum, Dad? This is Draco," I introduced and my parents both took turns shaking his hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you son, I've heard so many good things about you," said my father and I shook my head, looking down at the table. They've heard nothing about Draco besides maybe the things I said before this whole mess about Draco Malfoy being a complete jerk.
"Is that so?" Draco replied with a smirk, directing the comment at me before composing himself and responding respectfully, "The pleasure is all mine."
"So, how long have you two been dating?" My mum asked and I shook my head.
"Um, no mum it really isn't like that," I began before Draco cut me off.
"What Hermione means is that we've been dating for around seven months now, we just have been keeping it under wraps because our friends aren't very accepting of relationships between Gryffindors and Slytherins," he said, winking at me when I looked up to meet his eyes, but my parents didn't catch it.
"Oh how romantic! That's so Romeo and Juliet of you two!" My mum exclaimed, clasping her hands together in joy. Great, now we're about to ruin my parents' good moods.
"Well, actually, mum and dad, there's something we needed to talk to you about," I said and my parents both eagerly waited for me to continue. "Well, I'm not sure how to say this without completely disappointing you but, um, I'm pregnant," I said, the words rushing out of my mouth faster than I had expected.
"Ok," my mom said, taking a sip from her water that the waitress had just brought over. "When's the wedding?" She asked, and I could see my father clench his jaw, trying not to make a scene in the middle of a pub our family regularly visited when I'm home.
"Excuse me?" I asked and I hoped to God she didn't mean what she had just said.
"When are you two getting married? For the baby's sake and if you two have really been dating that long, a wedding should be scheduled soon," she said, taking out her phone and scrolling through her phone calendar. "Next weekend, if you two want we can stop by the courthouse and figure all of this out. Or if you would rather have a big wedding I can get in touch with your aunt, the wedding coordinator," my mother said.
"We're not getting married," I said and my father spoke up then.
"What kind of jerk will knock a girl up and then not marry her? You're having a baby, because abortion is out of the question, so marriage is the proper thing to do in this situation," my dad said to Draco and I shook my head at him.
"Dad, no. We can raise this baby without being married and his or her life will be fine regardless," I tried to argue but they both gave me looks of disappointment.
"I thought we raised you better than this," my mum said and my father nodded at her words before shaking his head at me in disapproval.
"I hope you two are as ashamed of yourselves as we are of you," my father said as he and my mother walked out of the pub. Draco turned to me to try to talk me out of the anger and sadness I was feeling, but I just stood up and walked out of the restaurant too. Another meal out that ended in no food being eaten.
I got to the sidewalk but my parents were already too far away and I didn't want to scream out to them and call attention to myself. Draco caught up to me as I began to walk back towards the portal between the wizarding and muggle worlds that we had used to get here in the first place.
We were about to use the portal when I turned to Draco, my eyes full of tears. I hadn't talked to him the whole time we were walking there so he didn't know exactly how badly I felt about all of this. All of a sudden my knees gave out and I fell towards him. He caught me and hugged me tightly to his chest while I let go of the sobs I had been holding in since my parents left the pub.
"We can't get married," I cried, "We haven't even officially started dating yet. Why did you tell my parents that we've been dating for seven months?" My words were broken up by sobs and most likely hard for Draco to understand.
"I said that because then it would seem like you were having a baby with a boyfriend that loved you as opposed to having a baby with some guy that you seduced at a party," he explained and I nodded against his chest.
"My parents hate me," I mumbled and he shook his head.
"No one could ever hate you, Hermione. You're smart, beautiful, and one of the kindest people I've met. Your parents were surprised, but they'll get over their surprise because I can't think of anyone in their right mind who would willingly walk away from a girl as amazing as you," he comforted and I looked up at him.
"Do you really believe that?" I questioned, and he nodded.
"I believe it with all of my heart," he sincerely replied and I gave him a small smile.
"Thank you," I quietly replied in shock that someone who used to be the Devil's spawn could suddenly be so heartfelt and mean every word.
I turned and was about to go through the portal when he spoke up. "One more thing," he said and I turned to look at him.
"Anything," I replied and he smiled.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked and a grin spread across my face.
"Of course I will," I responded and he pulled me towards him. With one hand on my stomach and his other hand on my lower back he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. Sparks shot from my toes up through my legs and to my fingertips and the top of my head. His breath was cool and minty, and I brought my hands up and ran them through his hair, causing him to shiver slightly. I was about to run my tongue along his lower lip when I heard the sound of someone clearing their throat.
I detached myself from Draco in embarrassment and caught sight of Harry and Ron standing in front of us. They were apparently planning on going to visit London today.
Ron stared daggers at Draco, who looked back at my ex-boyfriend with a triumphant smirk. Harry began talking when he realized that Ron wasn't going to.
"So you two told Dumbledore that you two were going out for dinner in London and he sent us out to deliver this message to you two and to bring you back to the school."
"Hogwarts has been under attack," Ron said in an urgent tone and my jaw dropped. Why is it that when I'm having a bad day, the universe sees fit to make it worse?
