Summer was soon coming to an end with the Fourth of July coming up. They played one night game every year, on this day. The whole sky would light up with fireworks giving us just enough light to play.

"What's the big deal?" Scott asked when Y/N and Benny knocked on his door.

"Night game. Come on!" Benny says. With no more questions asked Scott grabs his glove and the trio start running to the sandlot with the others....except Ham who was stuffing his face with chili-dogs and chips.

We played our best at times like these, because, I guess we all felt like we were part of the big leagues in some great stadium.  When we got there, everyone went to their respected positions, with Benny at bat and Y/N as the umpire (considering Scott took her place as left-center). Benny did his little wind up and nodded to Kenny when he was ready. Kenny pitched the ball and Benny hit it.

Everyone looked up to see where the ball went, but as Benny was rounding the bases, everyone got caught up in the fireworks. When Benny has finally made it back to home, Y/N grabbed his hand and he looked at her confused. She just nodded her head towards the fireworks and he watched them with the rest of the team, locking his and Y/N's fingers together.

Y/N knew that Benny would go on to bigger and better games, with his passion for the sport and how well he played at such a young age. But, until then, she would still be there to preserve his childhood so they could enjoy the little things in life like this together.

"Come on! Hurry up!" Ham yelled, holding his glove out in the air so Squints could throw the ball to him.

Squints finally threw the ball in when Ham shouted, "Pickle!" Benny was now stuck in a pickle in between third and home, just like how it was at the beginning of summer. Ham threw the ball to Yeah- Yeah and he threw it back to Kenny. They then started throwing it back and forth trying desperately to get Benny out. But, he was smarter than that, when Kenny threw it back to Yeah- Yeah at third, Benny quickly bolted home and made it, safe.

"Safe!" Y/N exclaims. The guys groan in disappointment while she just laughed.

These boys. She thought.

"Oh no!" Squints said. The team just looked over at him in confusion, that is until they saw some snobby lookin kids on bikes, riding their way. It was Phillips- captain of the Varsity baseball team at their school- and his goons.

Benny grabbed his bat just incase things got ugly and ordered Y/N to stay behind him. She would've argued but he sounded serious and he gently pushed her behind his slim figure, making her blush at his protectiveness. Once she actually thought about it, she noticed how cute Benny actually was. From his smooth, olive skin, his soft, fluffy hair, his big, hazel eyes. Not to mention he was nice to her and stuck up for her when needed, even though he knew that she could take care of herself. That's when she realized.

I have a crush on my best friend. She thought.

After a few seconds Phillips and his goons finally stopped on the base line between first and second.

"Yeah. It's easy when you play with a bunch of rejects and a fat kid, Rodriguez." Phillips said, making his goons snort. That comment made Ham, furious.

"Watch your mouth, Phillips!" Benny warned, pointing that bat at him.

"What'd you say, crap face?" Ham asked.

"I say you shouldn't even be allowed to touch a baseball. Except for Rodriguez, you're all an insult to the game!" He exclaimed. You could practically see the smoke coming from Ham's ears.

"Come on! We'll take you on! Right here, right now!" Ham exclaims. We all yell in usion agreeing. Phillips snorts in disgust.

"We play on a real diamond, Porter! You ain't good enough to lick the dirt off our cleats!" Phillips says.

"Watch it, jerk." Ham warns.

"Shut up, idiot!" Phillips retorts.

"Moron!" Ham yells.

"Scab eater!"

"Butt sniffer!"

"Puss licker!"

"Fart smeller!" Ham yells, Bertram sniffing the air making the boys laugh.

"You eat dog crap for breakfast, geek!"  Phillips exclaims.

"You mix your Wheaties with your momma's toe jam!" Ham retorts.

"You bob for apple in the toilet, and you like it!" Phillips yells. That made Ham turn red in anger.

"You play ball like a girl!" Ham yells. Everyone goes silent. Y/N scoffed and went up to Ham smacking him in the back of the head.

"Ow! What was that for?" He asked, rubbing his head.

"Girls can play ball! Watch your comebacks!" Y/N scolded. She then looked over at Phillips, eyeing his goons as well as him.

Pathetic. She thought.

"What's this, Rodriguez? So bad that you had to get a girl on your team?" Phillips teased. Y/N was livid. She stormed over to Benny grabbing his bat and grabbed Phillips by his collar.

"You better watch your mouth, pretty boy. Cause, I can promise you this. I alone can run circles around you and your goons. But, with this team, we'll put you in the dirt. Now you and your little posse better get off out lot before I put this bat in your skull." She warned, looking him in the eyes. He looked like his soul left his body. He was paler than when he arrived and his eyes were popping out of his head. He wiggled out of her grasp.

"Tomorrow. Noon. At our filed. Lets go!" He ordered, and they rode off. Y/N was still furious but she was proud of herself for standing up to him like that. While trying to calm herself down, Benny walked over to her and hugged her. She hugged him back and thanked him.

"No problem. Who knew you were suck a bad ass?" Benny said. When Y/N, Benny and Ham started their way back to the batters box the boys praised them for standing up to Phillips, especially Y/N.

"Nice, Y/N!" Timmy exclaimed.

"Yeah, yeah Y/N! You really scared 'em!" Yeah- Yeah yelled.

"Phillips almost peed himself!" Squints snorted. She just laughed at them.
