Chapter 3.

I couldn't sleep that night. My eyes stayed wide open. I felt trapped, I felt like my heart could break in the next few days. But at the same time, I didn't. I wrapped my arms around myself as I looked in the mirror. My hair was limp, my cheeks were bright and blushing, but my eyes were dull. I sighed and threw my hair up into a pony and then hopped in the shower, trying to clear my head before I started work.

My stomach churned as i ate. I didn't really have an appetite. I dind't know whether it was from nerves, though, or fear. My chest felt warm because of the necklace, but at the same time, it was starting to feel hallow. I dind't want this feeling.

When I arrived at work, I went into Mrs. Norton's office and grabbed the file and list she left for me to take care of for the next few days. It wasn't;t much, but they were also big items. As I looked at the list, I was surprised on what she put on here for me to do. I was surprised because of the trust she put in me. I smiled.
Getting right to work, I set out on the first few items for the list.

About halfway through the day's work and already halfway through the list. I received a call from Mrs. Norton herself.

"Megan speaking." I Answered.

"Yes, I need you to do me a favor. I left something in my desk in the left drawer. It is of much importance and I am afraid I need you to bring it to me. Can you get it to me within the the couple hours? I will be at my home." I heard her say, but I also herd a rustle in the background, making me think she was going through something. "Thank you very much, dear." She then hung up with very little reply from me.

Confusion took over me and I looked over the hallway and down to where her office was. I dind't know what was so important that she needed me to bring her that something.

Shrugging, I sighed and went over, unlocked her office one more, then went through her drawer. It wasn't that hard to spot as I figured it out in first glance. It was her husbands watch. In the two years I'ver worked for her, I've heard stories now and then about him, about his time here when he was alive. She always took this with her wherever she went, so I knew why she would want it now.

I grabbed it up gently from the bottom of the felt covered drawer, then placed it gently in a tissue before sliding it into my purse.

When I got to her house, I walked up without a second thought, other than that of what I was going to have to do today in order to stay on track with the schedule she left me. but that changed when I knocked on the door and a tall, dark haired man answered the door.

My heart stuttered, then stopped.

My eyes widened and I felt like I couldn't move for a moment. Just like usual though, Mitchell gave me a dashing smile and then proceeded to step aside for me to enter. I nodded my head and then entered, trying to clear the thoughts in my head that were going rampage.

I couldn't help but look down at the glowing locket around his neck though, and just as my eyes caught sight of it, I turned around so that he wouldn't look at the one around my neck. The one that could be possibly lit up because of him. My breaths seem to falter, but I couldn't help but turn to look at him when his smooth, velvety voice met my ears.

"How are you ms...." he started to say ,then trailed off with a thoughtful look on his face. "You know, I don't believe I ever caught your last name. My mother tends to just call you by Megan." He said.

"It's Hodges." I answered with a little laugh, looking down at the ground for some reason.

"Nice to officially meet you then Megan." when he said my name, I couldn't help but flush slightly.  "My mother speaks highly of you when mentioned." He added afterward.

"She is a lovely woman, and very respectable." I complimented, still looking down at me feet.
"Um, speaking of which," I said, finally looking up again and into his startling blue eyes. "Your mother asked me to bring something to her, which is the reason for my visit."

"Oh," He nodded his head. I went to reach for my purse on my shoulder, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw his expression change. I looked over at him, my hands still sliding my purse off my shoulder. "You... Your locket," He mumbled, scratching at his chin.

"Ah," words made it to my mouth, but then only a weird stutter came out. My hear rate sky rocketing through the roof. "Yeah, I um..." I mumbled, trying to say something, but nothing was coming to mind as I spoke.

"Sorry, I made you uncomfortable. " He said, noticing my face.

"No, no. It's fine." I found myself assuring him quickly. "Um, here is what Mrs. Norton wanted me to bring to her." I handed him the cloth covered jewelry. He eyed it skeptically and then opened the cloth, bis eyes going wide and then softening. "Were you close?" I asked him, then my eyes went wide as well. "I'm sorry, that was completely out of line."

"It's fine, no worries." He shook his head, still looking down at the watch in his possession. "We were, but I was always closer with my mother." He said, giving me a sad smile. My heart swelled in my chest and I didn't know what to do.

"I lost my own father as well." I told him a small smile on my face, though it was very wimpy. "Um, anyway. Sorry for keeping you, can you make sure that get's to your mother? I'm afraid I must get back to my duties for the day, or I won't make the quota for the next three days." I chuckled awkwardly.

"Oh, yes. Sorry for keeping you too, I'll see you to the door."  He said, seeming to snap out of a daze. He walked ahead of me and waited till I arrived at the door for him to open it. "I'll see you around, Megan." He said with a smile, and once again my heart jumped in my chest and made me almost falter in my steps.

"Good afternoon Mr. Norton." I nodded, then only stopped when his voice sounded from behind me again.

"Mitchell." He corrected and I turned to give him a curious gaze, a blush rising up my neck. Though, his face seemed to turn a shade darker as well and he looked away for a moment before looking back at me and giving me a lopsided smile. "Call me Mitchell."

"Good afternoon, Mitchell." I corrected my last goodbye after a moment, still looking at him curiously. When I got into the cab again, All sorts of thought were going through my head. And I couldn't make out a single one of them.
