CHAPTER 2
Gears felt himself waking up, his senses turning on and becoming re-attuned to the world around him. Then his alarm clock rang. Its sudden piercing screech sending shockwaves through his eardrums like the blast of a supernova. Carbon was not spared either. The terrified animal used Gears face as a launching pad in his exit, scratching his cheek.
Gears sat up sharply. "Scheiße!"
He touched his cheek, seeing no blood when he pulled his fingers back. He looked around and caught a terrified and guilty looking Carbie perched on his dresser.
Gears sighed and turned off the clock. "Es tut mir leid, ich wollte dich nicht erschrecken." He said to Carbie, his voice thick and gravelly with sleep.
Carbie meowed. Gears stood, walking over slow and running his hand against the cat's spine, continuing to apologize. The animal calmed, purring at the attention. He jumped down from his perch, following Gears as he left to inspect his scratch. He touched it again, hissing in pain as he looked in the mirror. The cut wasn't deep, thank God, but it would certainly get infected if he didn't clean it soon. The cat had come over and began rubbing himself lovingly around Gears' ankles as if to apologize for hurting him. Gears smiled and cleaned the cut, when he finished he heard a knock at his door.
"Gears, you okay? I heard the cat going nuts."
Gears opened the door, peeking out. "Yes... he was... scared of my alarm." He said, straining for his American accent.
Ice nodded. "Alright."
Gears closed the door, clutching his rapidly beating heart. He considered himself lucky that Ice hadn't overheard his German. He took a few deep breaths. In, out, in, out. His heart slowed to a more rhythmic pulse. He opened the door again and let Carbie out, shutting it to give himself privacy once more. He looked around his secluded room for a moment before moving to his morning routine. Pick out clothes, shower, change, grab a cup of coffee, and leave. Simple yet efficient, how Gears liked it. He left his room prepared for work at 5:00 sharp, coming into the kitchen, he saw Ice still in his pajamas sipping from a mug decorated in doughnuts and eating eggs. Gears' heart swelled at the younger man's disheveled visage. A small part of his brain thought he was lucky to be able to see this daily from now on, another much louder part scolded him for the inclination. He blinked away his thoughts as he walked in and grabbed his own mug.
"Mornin'." Came a tired voice behind him. "You usually get up this early?"
"Yes, I apologize if I woke you." Gears replied as he turned to face Ice.
"It's fine, the cats usually get me up a little later than this but I can adjust." Ice sipped again. "I made eggs, want some?"
Gears shook his head. "No thank you, I tend to forgo breakfast."
Iceberg's sleepy smile faded into mild concern, much to Gears' dismay. "Why?"
"It takes up too much time."
"Too much time? Gears, we only live 25 minutes from the site, you can eat."
Gears opened his mouth before shutting it again, Ice was right, he could eat breakfast now without having to watch the clock. He could even sleep for much longer.
Ice smiled at his win, before frowning again. "I-I just realized I forgot something."
Something in Gears' mind clicked but he couldn't tell what.
For a few moments they sat in confused silence. "We don't have work today!" They said together.
Ice leaned back and laughed, while Gears mentally slapped himself for forgetting about his moving in leave.
