Of tears and hope

Third person:

3 weeks.

That's how long Annabeth had been out.

It was hard or Percy, really hard. He couldn't visit her very often, since Athena hated his guts. And the times he did get with her, were short and depressing.

He knew Annabeth was in there, breathing and living, but it didn't feel like she was. Of course, it sucked even more since he hadn't had a conversation with her in...weeks? Maybe even months. And he...really missed her. A lot, too much.

Percy sighed. His life was so freaking cliché. Boy likes girl who has a boyfriend, girl breaks up with boyfriend, girl and boy fall for each other, then, they can't see each other. Weeks go by, girl and ex- boyfriend are hit by a car.

Most teenagers don't tell say they love each other, at least not mean fully. Percy and Annabeth, kind of said it. The day at the beach, they said they 'might love each other' but Percy said it to Annabeth...and meant it. He really did, and he knew it.

Percy rolled over, trying to find a comfortable position. He hadn't been sleeping much.

He tried all he could, put blankets over his blinds to make it darker, classical music, wave sounds, but none of it worked.

He needed Annabeth.

He could do that right? Go to the hospital at...

Percy looks at his old alarm clock.

11:28? That was okay...right?

Surely Athena wouldn't be there at this hour, and normally Percy wasn't one to sneak around but, he needed Annabeth.

Now.

Even if she didn't know he was there.

Percy gets up, throws a a shirt and some flip flops on, and leaves a note for Paul that he had his car...just in case.

Annabeth heard everything.

Every nurse, every machine, all the other patients, the creak of the opening door, every visitor.

Every visitor.

It was so hard hearing him. Hearing him cry, and talk to her...but not be able to respond. Not even do so little as the winking code. You know, blink once for yes, twice for know, three times for 'I have to go pee.'

All she could do was sit there.

And her whole body hurt like Hades.

If the fates were going to force her to listen to her loved ones talk about her like she was a dying corpse, the least they could do was make it less painful, geeze.

Annabeth thinks back to the first time she regained her conscience, she didn't know when it was, but she supposed it was shortly after she got hit because it was the most emotional visit.

'I love you.'

Normally, Annabeth felt oddly uncomfortable when people confessed there love for her -even though it was a rare occurrence- but from Percy...she enjoyed it.

Yes, she could tell the difference of Percy, and other people.

Annabeth didn't know how long she had been out -days, weeks, months, years, decades...okay, probably not decades- but she was worried about some things.

Luke.

Annabeth knew he got hit too, and she may not particularly like him...but he was like a brother to her. He helped fill the hole that her mother made when she left. Even if he filled it with...bread...then ate it...he still tried to help Annabeth. He just couldn't be there for her in a romantic relationship. It never would've worked.

...Yeah. Annabeth has been out for way to long.

Suddenly, Annabeth hears the loud, wooden, hospital door open and she nervously awaits the voice of her visitor.

...again, to long.

The sound of wet, rubber shoes indicates that the voyager had been traveling in rain, and the shoes make a fully 'squeak!' sound on the tile floor.

"Hello," A voice says. It sounds tired, and sad.

'Percy.'

"I couldn't sleep, and I supposed your Mom wouldn't be around this late," Percy laughs as if what he is going to say next is amusing, "The hospital staff take pity on me, they always let me in."

If Annabeth could move, she would've rolled her eyes.

Annabeth sensed the tension in the room thicken and she knew Percy was going into 'serious mode.'

"I know I already gave you my sappy speech," Percy pauses, "Okay, maybe a few. And I know you probably can't even hear me but...even for the slightest chance you can..."He trails off.

"Please wake up."

He sounds desperate and determined at the same time.

"You really need to wake up so you can do things! Graduate, go to...Yale, or Harvard, start your own architecture firm- bigger then your Moms! Find some nice, smart, jacked dude with lots of money who will take good care of ya, get married, have cute little Annie babies, grow old, have grand children...you need to live the life you deserve!"

'Now he's crazy talking, somebody call the ambulance- wait...'

"Be miserable without you, and watch you live a full, happy life, then be miserable, and watch you lie here...also miserable," he says with a very scratchy voice.

Annabeth can feel her eyes starting to burn.

"If you love someone you let 'em go...I guess."

She really wishes she could let tears out. The pressure on her eye balls is all most painful.

"So...I guess I have to let ya go."

'Shut up you doink, shut the heck up!'

Annabeth feels some thing wet roll out of her eye and down past her temple. Then again, and again and again.

She's crying.

She is crying!

That's progress, right? Her body is moving in some way. That's progress!

Percy doesn't notice until he goes to hold her hand.

"oh. Oh my gods! Annabeth, can you hear me?"

Annabeth mentally rolls her eyes. Maybe she could create her own code, three tears means yes, one means no.

"Annabeth? Annabeth, your okay. Wise Girl, it's okay."

Percy caresses her cheek, careful not to touch anything that looks like could hurt.

"Annabeth," Percy says, tears visible in his voice.

Now they are both crying. Some happy tears but mostly sad.

'I love you to Percy.'
