"It was hard to believe that I was never going to return home, to my real home. It was all gone now. I was never going to sweep the dust of the porch outside of our house. Jenny is having trouble with adjusting here. I am really worried for her. She probably misses her friends a lot, especially Jeb. I missed my family, my friends as well. I wish we all lived in the same town again, just like before. It's always nice to make new friends, but I still wish I had the opportunity to be with them. But I knew I had to make a new home now, keep my family safe and steady. Almanzo and Mr.Edwards owns a business together in town, while I am a housewife. Sometimes I miss teaching, but I know I will never teach again. Or as Ma said with some other words: A mother is a teacher her whole life."

- Laura Ingalls Wilder

Jenny was on her way to school, with her books under her arm. She didn't like the new school particularly, but what choice did she have? Everything she got to knew, her friends, her home - was gone. Nothing but dust left in an earlier town filled with memories and joy. Jenny missed Jeb an awful lot, and she dreamed from morning to night of hugging him once more. He was her bestfriend. It accured to Jenny, that he might have found a new bestfriend, wherever he was. The thought made Jenny swallow, almost shaking of fright. Even though they were apart, she never wanted to lose their friendship.

Jenny entered the school rom, and sat down. It was fresh air outside, spring was arriving. Irina, a blond, young beautiful girl sat just to seats in front of her, on the right side. She was rich, more than rich. Her father worked for the railroad company. Her curls reached her shoulders, and her blue eyes were sparkling. All the other girls admired her, and the boys as well. It was nothing like the school in Walnut Grove, where the most of the kids played along with each other. Here, it was nothing like that. Rich kids played with each other, and the poor ones with each other. Jenny played usually with no one. She sat by herself in every break, alone. Aunt Laura didn't knew, no one did. Not even the teacher seemed to notice, Miss Wood. Miss Wood was an old, strict lady. She always had her hair in a bun, and her glasses by the tip of her nose. Jenny was terrified of her, but never let her knew. She was afraid Miss Wood was going to punish her for it, giving her more homework or detention. It might seemed a little harsh, but Miss Wood was completely capable of it.

Miss Wood entered the classroom, after ringing the bell. Jenny opened her textbook. They were going to read a new text today, their homework for tomorrow. Miss Wood started writing pagenumber on the blackboard, and looked at the class. She seemed in a bad mood this day. Jenny looked down in her book, prayed inside that Miss Wood wouldn't ask her to read in front of the whole class. Jenny disliked it. She didn't disliked it back in Walnut Grove, because she felt safe and comfortable there. Here, she felt need to run away every single day. Miss Wood made her life a nightmare, usually at least. "Miss Wilder, please read for us." Miss Wood said with a clear, loud voice. Her voice was also sharp, and made Jenny make a little jump on her chair. "Yes, Miss." Jenny replied, with a low voice. She looked down at the first sentence, and felt suddenly awful. Like her blood was freezing to ice, like she couldn't breathe. She started reading with a shaking voice. "Speak louder, more clearer" Miss Wood commanded with a high tone in her voice. Jenny swallowed, tried to read her best. Miss Wood said nothing more, before Jenny was done. "I would like to see you after school, Miss Wilder." she said, turned around to the blackboard and started the history lecture. Jenny bit her underlip, leaned back in her chair. She let her mind fly off from Miss Wood's class, and thought of Jeb. "Jeb.." she whispered to herself.
