Nina and John started evacuating the neighbors. The house was more and more consumed by the flames. Everyone held their breath. "Jen..." Jeb whispered only for him to hear. He was in total shock, consumed by the fear. He couldn't move a foot. Completely frozen.
Almanzo, Eric and Lance had made their way inside the house. "We have to hurry, before the house is starting to collapse." Almanzo shouted out as he tried to search through the room. "Jenny!". They all coughed of the smoke that filled the room. "Laura said Jenny followed her. So she can't be far inside." Lance shouted to the two other men. "Let's go, then." Eric said and started walking forward with caress of the flames. They put their hands over their mouth as an attempt to protect themselves from the smoke. "Jenny!" they all shouted at different turns. "She is here!" Eric shouted and leaned down to a dark shade through the smoke at the floor. "She has passed out. Help me get her, Lance." Eric had expected that one would take her feet and one her arms. Before he could get a hold of her arms, Lance had already lifted her up in his arms. He coughed. "Let's get out of here." Almanzo looked up at the roof in ablaze.
Laura held Rose in her arms. "I'm sure they will find her, Laura." Sarah put her hand on Laura's shoulder in comfort. Laura nodded shortly with her eyes filled with tears. John and Nina came back running. "The neighbors are evacuating." Nina said. John looked at the house, then at his wife. She looked completely devastated. "We will get a new home." he said as he put his arm around her waist and brought her close to him. "Are they still in there?" he asked. "They need to hurry." he said as he looked at the house. The flames were dancing. His feet were ready to run if they didn't arrive by the next minute. Before he could start, they saw three shadows make their way out of the house. "Jenny!" Laura yelled. Sarah took Rose from Laura's arms as Laura ran towards them. Lance held in his arms as they walked from the house. Jenny was covered partly in black in her face and her clothing. "Let's bring her to the hospital." Almanzo said in a hurry. Lance nodded and they went over as fast as they could to the hospital. Jeb stood here behind with the others in shock. Was Jenny hurt? Was she going to be okay? Of course, Lance was the one to carry her...But he couldn't care about that now. All that mattered, was if she was going to be okay.
-------
Most of the family had spent their nights at their wagons. The house was completely ruined by the flames. Jenny was in hospital. Laura and Almanzo took turns sitting by her bed. Jeb had barely slept anything that night. He was too scared for Jenny. Lance and him was at the hospital waiting room at the moment. "I'm sure she will be okay." Lance said and put his hand on Jeb's arm. "Yes, I know." Jeb replied. He folded his hands and took a deep breath. She had to be okay. She just had to. "She is close to you?" Lance asked. "Yeah, she is." He hoped at least. He felt she was close to him. Lance nodded and let his hand leave Jeb's shoulder. Laura came into the waiting hall. "She is awake" she said and smiled. "She needs a lot of rest. But she is going to be okay." Jeb let out a big breath. "Thank God." Lance smiled. "You can go see her if you like, Jeb." Laura said. Jeb nodded and raised from the chair. He swallowed sharply and followed after Laura to the room.
"I'll let you be alone." Laura said as she closed the door behind Jeb. Jeb looked at Jenny laying in bed. "Hi Jeb" she whispered and smiled. Jeb walked towards her and sat down on the chair next to her bed. "Hi, Jen." he smiled. "You sure gave everyone a fright". She nodded. "I'm sorry, Jeb. The smoke came so fast and I couldn't follow aunt Laura and ---". He took her hand. "Jenny. Don't worry. We are just glad you are okay." He bit his lip. "I'm glad you are okay." Jenny tightened her fingers around his. Their eyes kept contact. The silence should normally have bothered them both, but it didn't for some reason. "Jenny, I have something I want to tell you ---" Jeb started as the door slipped open. "I'm sorry, but the doctor wants to check her again." Laura said as she peeked into the room. Jeb nodded. "Get some rest, Jen." he smiled at Jenny before he let go of her hand and walked out the room. Jenny was left behind in the bed feeling her heart beating faster than ever.
