Friday, June 1st, 1962. Last day of school

Smalls POV:

It was the last day of school, finally. Well, not for me. I only moved here about a week or two ago, so Bill, my stepdad, didn't want to sign me up for school yet, as it would've been a waste of money. My mom was a bit disappointed cause she wanted me to find some friends at school, and I technically did. The sandlot boys- I saw them practicing once and watched them play. The result of that was...embarrassing, to say the least. But it all worked out, considering I think I finally have a place on the team.

The real reason I was at school today is because of them, actually. Bertram had said that since it was the last day of school, then there was a lot more free time. And that of course, means more time to play baseball.

I was out in left field waiting for the ball, if it ever came to me that is. The game was about to end, and Benny had found himself in another 'pickle'. He ran back and forth between two of the bases, waiting for the perfect chance to break this 'cycle' and sprint towards home plate. (Sorry if that didn't actually make sense, I don't play baseball 😅)  And that opportunity came soon enough. He was at home plate in no time.

But as I was watching this happen, something caught my eye. On the bleachers sat a girl, with h/c hair and a pair of e/c eyes. Now it wasn't anything in particular about the girl herself that was interesting, it was her Jersey that got my attention. It had a big '3' on the center of it, aswell as the words "Ruth" in bold letters. Babe Ruth.  I heard my step dad- I mean Bill talking about this lady a lot, but I just thought she was a friend of his. But I guess not. (Yes I know Babe Ruth isn't a girl, but in the movie Smalls had thought Babe Ruth was a lady called "Baby Ruth" )

I continued to stare at the girl, trying to figure out who this "Ruth" person was. If she wasn't a friend of Bill's, then who was she? I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard the others yelling at me.

"C'mon Smalls! We wanna eat!" Ham shouted.

"Yeah yeah, hurry up will ya?!" I stole another glance at the girls shirt before running off to meet with my friends. Maybe they would know who this person is.

~ At the table ~

We gathered at a table outside, the umbrella in the middle barely able to block out the sun's rays. Swallowing the bite of pizza I had in my mouth, I hesitantly spoke. "So uh- question"

The boys all turned to look at me, and I got a little nervous. 'What if they judge me-?' Kenny raised an eyebrow. "Well, what is it Smalls?" I looked at them before I finally spoke. "So there was this girl, on the bleachers. She was wearing this uh- jersey of some sort. It said Ruth on it...? Oh- and she had a f/c baseball cap?" I wasn't really sure how to describe her, and I was sure they didn't know who I meant. "Oooohh I know who your talking about. Did they have h/c hair too?" Squints asked. I nodded.

'Thank god, I was sure they wouldn't have understood.'  Soon the other guys started speaking up too. "Oh yeah- your talking about y/n!" Bertram said. "Y/n...? Is that her name?" I mumbled to myself. "Yep. Also known as the only girl to ever get Benny Boy's attention~" Kenny teased. Benny's head shot up at this. "Shut up DeNunez!! I said I don't like her!"  All the boys began laughing, and I couldn't help but laugh aswell. Benny' cheeks flushed, and he looked down at his food and aggressively shoved his pizza into his mouth.

"Whatever helps you sleep at night man" Ham laughed.

"Whatever..." Benny mumbled, cheeks getting redder by the second. I must admit, I was a bit surprised by this. In the short time I've known Benny, it was pretty clear that he wasn't the type to obsess over girls, unlike some of the others on the team.We laughed again, and soon the conversation died out. We continued on with our day, and I'll admit, I lost track of time. Before I knew it, I had to go if I wanted to make it home in time for dinner. I said my goodbyes to the guys and raced home.  Once I was only about a block away from my house, I realized that I never actually found out who "Ruth" was.

'Aww man! That was my chance!' I mentally cursed myself. To make matters worse, I ran into someone while walking. We both fell to the ground, and I immediately began to apologize.

"I'm so so so sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going-"  I said as I scrambled to my feet. I looked up and saw the same girl from earlier, Y/n. She laughed and rubbed the back of her neck. "Don't be- I wasn't paying attention either" She replied awkwardly. We stood for a few moments in awkward silence. "U-um I'm Scotty, Scotty Smalls! But you can just Call me Smalls.." I said, desperate to break the silence. "Nice to meet you Smalls, I'm Y/n, Y/n L/n."

I nodded my head. "Yeah I know!" She looked at me oddly, and I realized how weird that sounded. "I-I mean, not in the weird way! I mean I've seen you around, I mean I've heard of you. I mean-" but before I could continue she cut me off. "N-no don't worry, I get it. Small town..." I nodded in relief, hoping I didn't mess up my first impression.

"Anyways...I have to go, I'll see you around Smalls." She said, waving as she walked off. As soon as she left, I let out a breathe that I didn't know I was holding. 'What a day...."

Hey y'all, sorry if that wasn't great, this is actually my first story.  I hope y'all liked it, bye!
