The music was blaring loud enough to burst my eardrums, it was a Friday night and people were dancing in this tiny room in a complete stranger’s house. At least that’s what he is to me. Jen said it would be nice to get distracted and get back into routine, but this was never my routine. I still came because I wanted her to believe that I was better and I also wanted to believe that myself.

Maybe then it could become a reality.

In ordinary days I would find myself capable of discerning fading colors, but recently everything had been in shades of grey. I guess the color in this world died the moment my parents did.

“Hey Skylar” Marcus said as he neared me, green eyes shining. Maybe not all color.

         “Hi Marcus”

“What are you doing there all alone?” he asked and took a swing of his beer, but as far as I could tell he was nowhere near drunk.

“Not really into parties” I answered frankly.

“Was the last one an exception?” he emitted as he neared me reducing the space between us.

“Last time” I said, “I was dragged here just like today, so no exceptions”

He pouted and held his chest as if wounded by my words and I managed to stifle a laugh. I had missed that feeling. And he was laughing to.

“I knew I could get you to laugh, I just had to figure out how,” he suddenly grew serious pulling his brows together, “but when it comes to what you said, I want to be an exception and I want you to be mine too.”

Suddenly my blood ran cold and warm at the same time, everybody, EVERY.SINGLE.PERSON kept reminding me that they were there for me, that I could count on them, but while they just did it sporadically he did every single day without missing out. I wanted to question him but all I could emit was a nervous laugh.

“Well, words don’t really count as evidence do they?” I said quietly.

“But if you give me time I can turn words into actions” he said with a wink.

He suddenly took my hand, driving me away from all the noise and cluster of people. We exited the room and went out to the backyard. It was beautiful. Grass covered every inch of the ground where we stood, flowers were scattered in strategic places around the clearing and the was a tall stone fountain in the middle of it all, but what made it beautiful was how the moonlight gave it all a mysterious light. It was intimidating yet inviting.

He led me towards the fountain and we both sat on the edge of it, I was suddenly extremely aware of how the water flowed through the pipes of the fountain and the way the stars shone in the sky, it was settling.

“Now I demonstrate action.” Marcus said, taking me out of my reverie.

His hand went to his coat. Men and their coats with far too many pockets. He took out a rectangle shaped item and when it came into the light I saw that it was a book. But not just any book.

“This” he said “is my copy of The sky’s lining, I overheard you talking to Jen about how you forgot your copy at home and I know how much it hurts you to go back there so here,” he handed me his copy, he had a shy look on his eyes, which wandered around my face searching for a reaction. “Now I know it’s kinda battered up but…”

His words were cut off by the contact of my lips against his, “Thank you” I whispered in his ear, “this really means a lot.”

He took me into a kind embrace, my head on his shoulder and his arm around my back. We were both silent but I didn’t mind. I just held the book in my hands as if making sure it wouldn’t vanish. I didn’t want this moment to disappear.
