"I swear I felt so terrified" Jen mused as she had been for the rest of the day after the incident and I just mumbled a response as I had been every time she brought it up. All I wanted was to forget, but Jennifer as she normally did just wanted to inflate the lightning strike's importance.
And I wanted the complete opposite.
She just kept on talking about how she felt herself die a little bit in the "terrible" darkness but I tried not to give her much of my attention. I didn't want it to mean anything, because maybe if I ignored it, it would go away.
"Hey Sky, you listening?" she had an annoyed tone on her voice, making her enounce the last world more than clearly.
"Yeah right, terrifying" I muttered back flatly.
She came to a halt and turned to face me, directly in the eyes. "What's wrong?" she asked.
My palms started sweating, why was I nervous? I had nothing to hide and it felt so stupid to hide it from my best friend, but still I felt like mentioning the man would get me a direct ticket to the nut house, so I just came to the most obvious approach.
"I am most likely going to fail chem" I blurted out.
Her gaze softened as she put a hand on my shoulder. "You know what will help?" she asked "vodka, lots of it" a wide grin was plastered on her face.
"Ah- Jen" I stammered "no, nonono".
"Yes, yesyesyes" she said even more excited, "there's a party today, at Wesley's house, just come over to my place and we'll get ready there and I mean it's not like you have to ask for permission anyways, your parents come back tomorrow right?" she had a glow in her eyes that seemed to special to take away she had thought about it all, a nearly flawless plan.
"Okay, fine" I conceded. There were yay's and jumping and clapping, but I didn't mind, this is Jen, she is a ball of rainbow puking sunshine on each and every hall, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
The rest of the day was as dull and eventful but not in the best way, I dropped water on my math notes, literally tripped my way into gym class, trapped my sweater inside my locker while I was wearing it and crashed into someone in the cafeteria. In sum I had to change my clothes twice and spent my entire free period getting mystery meat out of my unruly hair. What a day!
But it was all over now, Jen gave me a ride home and kept on reminding me to go to her house throughout the ride, but I just nodded and muttered affirmations to it all, I had no excuse to not go anyways. And when we finally reached my home I said goodbye and walked up the front steps as her red convertible sped off into the woods once again. Because of course my house had to be in the middle of a freaking forest.
I opened the front door letting myself in, making sure to lock it afterwards. It was completely silent but that's to be expected, this place had been empty for a week now, my parents and their work trips. I found myself staring at a picture hanging on the wall, it was my tenth birthday and I have cake plastered all over my face and a smile that goes from cheek to cheek, my parents were there too, smiling at the camera, hugging me.
I smiled like a fool, that was an amazingly good day, one of the greatest at that. At a distance I heard a phone ringing, bringing me out of my reverie. I headed towards the kitchen and grabbed the house phone. "Hello?" I say.
"Oh hi honey!" I hear my mother say on the other end of the line "I just wanted to call in to check up on you" she said in a chipper tone.
