A flashlight rested upon her shoulder, lighting up the black ink on pages slightly less white compared to when the book was first published. The spine of the paperback cracked leaving white streaks running up and down the golden color of the cover while some of the corners remained dogeared so the reader might come back to their favorite parts, but more importantly, she ate up every word on the very last page.
Lyra read the book so many, many times, it felt as if she knew them by heart. More importantly, she felt as if she knew the characters, felt when they felt, but the books felt like an escape from the reality of foster care where one packed all of their possessions into a garbage bag whenever one foster family ended up falling through, but the books – the set of books always went with herm making her feel safe.
A sudden crack of thunder made the book drop from her hands, clattering onto the floor while the streetlights outside flickered. More importantly, the flashlight dropped onto the ground, bouncing slightly before rolling across the floor. Hurriedly, Lyra got out of bed, leaving her book behind so she might scamper after the flashlight and turn it off before one of her foster parents discovered she was reading under her blankets at night.
Reaching down, Lyra's hand grasped the flashlight and tapped the device against the palm of her hand, and turned off the light, carefully listening for the footsteps of one of the foster parents yet finding herself grateful she'd managed to finish the final book, her mind wanting to desperately think up stories so she might escape reality which waited for her in the morning once the storm passed.
Lightning flashed and the flashlight dropped, making Lyra jump as the window lit up and the tree just outside cast an eerie sight.
Her heartbeat quickly, her eyes closing as she reached down for the flashlight, a voice reaching out for her as she suddenly thought herself caught by her foster mother, yet when her fingers wrapped around the long item at her feet, it wasn't as bulky as a flashlight. Much to Lyra's surprise, the strange item felt very much like...
The object felt like a wand.
