Chapter 24: Death

... Helgrind. The black mountains where the Ra'zac hid. Were his uncles murderers lived. The one place he thought he would never go. "Galbatorix has taken him to Helgrind." Eragon said.

"Galbatorix? You said he was dead. How is he alive?" Brom replied.

"You're alive. Why is this surprising?"

"Well I- I didn't really think about my death. I sort have just woke up here. Don't remember anything before that."

"You don't remember the battle? It seemed to last years! How could you not?"

" I don't remember anything."

"Could our memories have been wiped? We are not the first to come back from the dead, however, we are the first first to live this long. Usually all people who are brought back from the dead are killed somehow within the hour they are. Only one of these people recorded what it was like, and they said they remembered nothing of the afterlife. Tell me, was there some sort of gate when you entered the Void?" Omoris asked.

" Yes."

" I thought so. You are the first to be actually alive and enter and later leave the void, and I doubt that anyone would have thought to have that gate erase the memories of the living. just the dead. So, tell us, Eragon, what happened in the void?"

"When I got there it was as I expected... In fact it was as if I was seeing the Void though my minds eye, as if someone had looked into my mind and put that image in front of me. As I set out I a random direction, I heard a scream. Then a man shrouded in black ran out of a nearby house. I followed him. eventually, I came across Saphira and Brom. The man had gone invisible by then, and I had lost him. I told you what I had seen and heard, and you took me before the Riders. There was so many of them. Millions and millions! It was such a sight! And Vreal, Eragon, all the leaders of the Riders were there. Your father and mother, Arya. My mother. Garrow, Marrian. Everyone! It was a joyous time. But then, when I told them what I had seen, their faces darkend. They told me thatRiders had gone missing, without a trace. And twenty-four of there prisoners had gone missing. You know thse prisoners well. As we hurried to Death, the god of the Void, So did Galbatorix. He had gathered many enimies. All of the Riders who had turned but were killed. And some knew ones who thought that they could take over. After we counted, We saw that we had only a few hundred more than they did. When we reached Death we informed him of the situation. He was the key. He was the one who could let people go back into the world. And if he was killed, Then the portal would be open, anyone could go back. When Galbatorix met us in battle, it was chaos. many of his warriors were inexperienced, so they fought frantically. I killed many that day. I myself rode on Galbatorix's first dragon, as he had allied himself with our cause. We won the day, but Galbatorix had already fatally wounded Death. When Death was dueling off against three other Riders, one of them Morzan, Galbatorix dove down on him. Death looked up in time to see him, and almost cut off his leg. However, Galbatorix cut off his arm before retreating. Then It was all over. We were all sucked back trough the gate, back to Alagasia." And then the group set out for Helgrind, determined to kill Galbatorix once and for all. Before they could, however, Death himself strode forth from the shadows.

"You must kill me. I must be sent back to the Void. I must be there or Galbatorix will never die."

"Are you sure?" Eragon asked.

"Yes. Take my sword, and drive it through my heart."

So Eragon took the blade. It was black on one side, and blood red on the other. The hilt was pure white. A black, red, and white gem sat in the pomel. It looked as if a diamond, ruby, and opal had been combined into one. Eragon took the blade and, as respectfully as possibly, stabbedDeath in his heart. Then he and his equipment turned to ash. Then they resumed their jurny, only stopping at Illreal to recruit the full force of the Riders before setting off to Helgrind. A battle that would be sung across the land for many ages was about to commence.
