Chapter Two

   I wake up in a green field surrounded by sunflowers. It was nighttime and silent. It felt so peaceful to be sitting alone in this field. I close my eyes and tilt my face towards the night sky. I open them and smile. The sky is dark blue with the stars shining bright. Yet there are strange lights that mimics lines shooting through the stars. They're all types of colors ranging from deep greens to dark purples and complement the night sky. I felt drawn to where they lead and began to stand up. I felt as though if I just reached out I could see where they ended.

   "The walls, please stay away from the walls. Today stay as close to the interior as possible." Whispers came from nowhere. It was barely recognizable as words let alone who was saying it. I quickly looked around my sides and behind me but there wasn't a person to be found. I looked back to the pretty lights nervously. Are they speaking to me? Maybe trying to give me a warning of what may come?

   Alas, before I could get any answers I woke up to reality. Unfortunately instead of the peaceful sunflowers and a starry night sky I wake into my cage and brat little sister. I heavily sigh before sitting rubbing and rubbing my eyes. I look over to Clara's bed to see she's still sleeping. Boo you little sleepy head. I yawn and dress to complete my chores for the day. I figured I would let Clara sleep in another hour or so. It couldn't have been later than 08:30. I would wake her once I finish washing our clothes from the previous week.

*Roughly an hour later*

"Clara doll, wake up. I need you to make the beds in the house and collect the eggs from the hen house then I'll make you breakfast." I lightly push her awake and she hastily blinks. I treat what I told her in a motherly tone and she jumps up. As she's rushing to change for the day she asks to meet one of Eren's friends down by the river. They had supposedly made these plans before scaring me yesterday. I nod but shoo her away to start on the chores. I check on the clothes I hung on the clothesline but of course they were still damp.

After finishing up breakfast with Clara, I clean our plates then check on my father. His room was empty which meant he was already to the office. It was barely 10:00 so I was surprised he got such an early start. Feeling a bit lonely and not wanting to stay home waiting for the clothes to dry, I decide to go for a walk. I put my hooded jacket on and step on the Stoney path towards the small forest in our backyard. There's one clearing that's one of my favorite spots to read in and it's only about a mile into the forest. It feels great to be alone, lost in my thoughts and it reminded me of my dream.

"Stay away from the wall" I look up from my book. There's that whisper again. I looked around and didn't see anyone. It was probably just my thoughts, it was a weird dream after all. I was reading a romance novel written by a favorite author of mine. The main character was a knight in a far away land who came to save a damsel in distress. I fingered the pages, feeling the texture of the paper and drifting off again. I imagined the knight looked like the stranger I had met at the market yesterday and that I would be the damsel in distress. I could feel my heart racing and instantly a warmth fluttered in my stomach. A light smile graced my lips as suddenly I hear screams. How?

I throw my book to the ground and jump up to run towards the direction of the screams. Oh my God, why is it still going. Who is screaming? Isn't that multiple people? Wait. Is Clara ok? She was near the river in the middle of town. I make it to the edge of the forest and it happens. I look up and there's Titans inside the walls. Tall, physically deformed, human looking things are scattering throughout my home. My eyes widen in shock as I cover my mouth to not attract attention. I look at the hole in the wall that I assume the Titans came in through. How did this happen? I have to find Clara. Oh no, what about my father? He is probably still in his office, lost in his work. I run towards the river but see only Titans. Luckily, they haven't noticed me and were distracted by the others, my peers. I ran back to my home, praying Clara got to our house safely. She most likely ran to find me.

The sight in front of me was terrifying. My body froze and although my brain told me to move I couldn't budge from the spot I was in. Horror ran through me as Clara, my little brat sister, saw me and smiled. She felt safe in these last moments. And unfortunately I knew these would be her last moments because as she ran towards me, she didn't notice the ugly thing that was reaching for her. Clara's legs traveled as fast as they could but couldn't outrun the reach of that titan. She got close enough to me to notice wha I was looking at and stopped in her tracks. Time slowed down and she spun around and realized what would happen. That this was the end of her. My little brat sister was grabbed and eaten in front of my eyes. I dropped to my knees and screamed my cries. I watched in despair as the titan finished and noticed me. I was in shock.

"What are you doing? It's going or get got. Let's move NOW." I'm pulled away and thrown over the broad shoulders of a tall man. I felt the salty tears running down my face as the titan began its walk towards us. I continue screaming and crying until the we manage to escape from the titan. The stranger takes me to the gate that leads to the area with the only escape boats. He pulls me off and sets me gently on the ground as the garrison soldiers around us are shouting for canon fire. The man kneels down to look me in the eyes.

"I'm sorry for your loss. I assume that was a family member and I truly am sorry. I remember you from the market and had hoped to see you again but not like this." His hazel eyes locked right into mine. The seriousness I felt with his gaze and his words shook me to my core. I had stopped screaming but with the last few tears running down my face I smile and walk through the gate to my escape from Shingashia.
