"Well, that's one way to decorate a classroom. Not sure I like it very much though." Rachelle said, wrinkling her nose at the smell of over excessive use of perfume.
"Where is she?" Ron asked as he appeared from the floor.
A voice came suddenly out of the shadows, a soft, misty sort of voice.
'Welcome,' it said. 'How nice to see you in the physical world at last.'
Their immediate impression was of a large, glittering insect. Professor Trelawney moved into the firelight, and they saw that she was very thin; her large glasses magnified her eyes to several times their natural size, and she was draped in a gauzy spangled shawl. Innumerable chains and beads hung around her spindly neck, and her arms and hands were encrusted with bangles and rings.'Sit, my children, sit,' she said, and they all climbed awkwardly into armchairs or sank onto pouffes. Rachelle, Harry, Ron and Hermione sat themselves around the same round table.
'Welcome to Divination,' said Professor Trelawney, who had seated herself in a winged armchair in front of the fire."My name is Professor Trelawney. You may not have seen me before. I find that descending too often into the hustle and bustle of the main school clouds my Inner Eye.'
Nobody said anything in answer to this extraordinary pronouncement. Professor Trelawney delicately rearranged her shawl and continued, 'So you have chosen to study Divination, the most difficult of all magical arts. I must warn you at the outset that if you do not have the Sight, there is very little I will be able to teach you. Books can take you only so far in this field ...'At these words, both Harry and Ron glanced, grinning, at Hermione, who looked startled at the news that books wouldn't be much help in this subject.
'Many witches and wizards, talented though they are in the area of loud bangs and smells and sudden disappearings, are yet unable to penetrate the veiled mysteries of the future,' Professor Trelawney went on, her enormous, gleaming eyes moving from face to nervous face. 'It is a Gift granted to few. You, boy,' she said suddenly to Neville, who almost toppled off his pouffe, 'is your grandmother well?'
'I think so,' said Neville tremulously.
"I wouldn't be so sure if I were you." She said briskly before turning her attention to the Lupin girl, who was inspecting the tablecloth."Girl!"
Rachelle's head snapped up and she looked at the teacher. She pointed to her chest, as though asking "me?". Trelawney nodded and continued, "How's your mother? Is she alright?"Harry, Ron and Hermione whirled around to face their friend, having heard nothing of Rachelle's mother or Lupins wife.
"Define alright." Rachelle said after a slight pause, in which her eyes flashed and darkened.
Trelawney looked horrified at the question, and the students could guess that no one had asked her such a thing.Rachelle appeared calm and collected as she stared back at her Professor, yet anyone who knew her well enough could see the way her light brown eyes started shining in a way that couldn't be naturally there.
Rachelle cocked a brow, signaling to the teacher that she was waiting for an answer.
"Alright— means—uhh... healthy, and mentally stable." Trelawney decided."Then she's not alright at all." Rachelle said dully, her eyes sparkling. Trelawney looked affronted, as though this was an insult.
The rest of the class was silent as Rachelle turned back to fiddling with the tablecloth, her long brown hair masking her sweating eyes.
Trelawney attempted to regain everyone's attention again but to no avail, everyone was too interested in Rachelle's past to give a damn about the lesson at hand. "Shove off!" Ron yelled, and everyone turned back to their tables gossiping absentmindedly. Rachelle remained silent throughout the rest of the lesson, and Harry, Ron and Hermione found the lesson extremely dull without Rachelle's sarcastic comments about the teacher or topic they were learning.
It was unnerving to see their normally bubbly and cheerful friend looking depressed and quiet. Ron had tried to cheer her up but the only response he got was a tiny smile just visible through her brown hair, from when he accidentally fell off his stool and landed on the floor with an "oof!".
The second the bell rang Rachelle was already out the door and didn't look back to see if her friends were following.
