"So Mia, what does your class schedule look like?"
This was how I was greeted on the first day of sophomore year. Of course, Kylie jumped right into the conversation. She was never one for greetings like "hello."
My best friend joined me at the school lobby as I registered her words. Wait... schedule? I didn't even bother to look at mine! I wasn't about to tell Kylie that, though.
"Um... it looks like a white piece of paper." I pulled out the neglected schedule from my jeans pocket.
"Did you even look at it?" Oh, darn. She saw right through my act.
"You're never going to survive high school when you're so irresponsible," Kylie bluntly stated. "I'm surprised you've made it this far."
This was why I didn't want to tell Kylie that I didn't look at my schedule. I knew she would scold me for my carelessness.
"Well, let's see it." Thankfully, she let the subject drop.
I unfolded the white paper, hoping that the school would give me at least one class with Kylie this year. I don't even want to think about how lonely I was last year...
"Hey, I didn't know you played an instrument," Kylie nonchalantly said, looking at the schedule.
"I don't," I responded. "Why would you think that?"
"Why else would you be in Band?" Kylie pointed at my Day One, Hour One spot.
What?! I'm in band?! I questioned in disbelief. My eyes followed Kylie's finger, afraid of what the schedule read.
Day One, Hour One: Band.
Oh, no. No, no, no!
I didn't even sign up for band! At least, I didn't think I did; I filled out course selections in December! That was like ten months ago! How would I remember? The school must have made a mistake! I needed to talk to the secretary.
I frantically scanned the schedule for any other mistakes before going to the main office. Everything looked fine, except... Where was my Drawing class?!
Then it hit me like a slap in the face. I suddenly remembered.
I put Band as an alternate class. And I must have gotten Band instead of Drawing.
It looked like I was in for one heck of a school year.
