Ali had already gone to the mail box twice that day and there was no mail. She wondered what was keeping the mailman. She was on edge; she was anxious; she was paranoid. It was almost a month since Jake left and not a word from him...no calls, no letter. Ali was on the verge of getting the government involved. She checked the mail box again and finally the mail was there. Ali paced as she went through the mail, bills, bills, junk and then there it was, a letter from Jake and a postcard too. She was overcome with emotion at finally hearing from him.
Ali looked at the postcard. It was a picture of their house but painted in the weirdest of color...navy blue. It was their house only it wasn't. The number on the house was the same, 1606...the shape was the same and the window placement was the same but the fencing was different. What was the meaning of this? Why would Jake send her this postcard?
The letter said "From Jake".....but there was no postage or post mark on either the envelope or the postcard...no evidence that they came through the mail. It was as if someone off the street just dropped them into her box. What the hell was going on? was someone playing a prank on her. Halloween was months away. Then she thought that maybe they did not come through the mail service but that Jake asked someone to drop them off to her.
Ali quickly pried open the strange looking envelope, not the usual color white, but gold. Ali almost passed out. Yes It was from Jake. That was Jake's handwriting but what had her in a panic was the date on the right corner, August 22nd 2100 in bold scripted writing...was it a simple mistake, a prank or something worst?
Her hands began to shake and her eyes fill with tears as she began to read it.
"My darling Ali, its me Jake. If you are reading this, it means that you have finally gotten my letter. Its been almost a year and my life is still in limbo, but I will not rest until I find a way back to you,"
Ali read that line over and over again. "Almost a year?" She whispered. Jake was gone only a month. She felt like she was in the Twilight Zone. She continued to read, her heart pounding and with tears blurring her vision.
"Please don't rip this up Ali. You must read through to the end. Something has happen to me that I cant comprehend and neither will you. At first I thought that I was dead and gone on to a different dimension, but I am not dead Ali; I am very much alive and living in our house.....100 years into the future.....yes that's right in the year 2100. People here would have me believe that you are a figment of my imagination, that you exist only in my head but on my good days I know better...I know that you are not a dream and that I did have a life with you in this house and in another time. I am not crazy..."
