The Case Of Ali

Chapter 14. Ali's Wish

Ali delivered  a healthy baby boy  and for a while there was nothing else that mattered than to hold her baby in her arms and have Jake there with her to share in her joy. That was her wish in both realities and she had that.  Dr. Wright, Alex to Ali was right there enjoying the bliss with Jake and Ali. 

"What color do you think his eyes are ; they keep changing color," Ali said.

"They are the deepest green Ali; are you color blind?" Alex said.

"Yea you are right; they are the same color as Jake's," Ali said.  Then she remembered something, someone; the man with the green eyes who wanted to buy their house; she remembered that day so vividly.  With the scruff on his face and his rock star attire, it was hard to tell if it was Jake standing there, but  she looked into his eyes and she recognized those eyes.  She was sure that he was Jake come back from the future....but with no memory of her.  So if that was not Jake, then who was he?.....Oh that too was a dream.  Ali was so confused. Ali thought the universe was playing tricks with her. Alex always said nothing is as it appears and she was beginning to believe it.  There were days that she was not even sure if  the life she was living  at the moment was real.    

"Have you decided on a name yet?" Alex asked sensing Ali's sudden distress.  

That was the one thing Ali had not decide on.  She wanted Jake's input on what they named their son. Cynthia wanted her to name the baby after Jake, but Ali recalled Jake telling her that  he didn't want that.  She remembered having that conversation with Cynthia about what Jake might want to name his son. They were trying to convince her that it never took place and that  she created all of it  in her head.  How could it all be a dream when all the detail flowed so seamlessly ? Ali kept wondering.

 "We should name him after you Dr. Wright especially since you will be his godfather. Alexire is such a unique name, don't you think so Jake? I don't believe there is another Alexire  anywhere in this century or any century in the past," Ali said implying that Alex and his very unique name were from the future.   Jake looked at Ali; he wondered  where she was going with this.  

In her "dream" Ali and Alex had a great relationship; with Jake missing, Alex had been her rock and best friend.  In this reality their relationship was strained as the relationship was strictly  a doctor patient one.  And that annoyed Ali to no end.  She missed "her"  Alex. To be honest, she did not care much for this version of Alex.

"Naming our son after the Doc is one thing but  you have to ask him if he wants to be godfather Ali; you cant just tell him," Jake said. 

"The Alex I remember would not mind being godfather to our son; but I don't know about this Alex or I should say Dr. Wright," Ali said with a slight sarcasm in her tone that Alex picked up on right away.  

"Of course I don't mind Ali, but what I think he needs is a godfather who will be a constant in his life. I am all over the globe; It could be years before I see him again; it would not be fair to him," Alex said.

you mean all over the universe, Ali thought.

"I like the name Zachary," Jake said and both Alex and Ali  looked in his direction.....Alex with a smirk  and Ali with her mouth all open as if she was in shock.

Ali's mouth dropped to the floor and Alex smiled at her as if he knew something. That man who came to her house asking to buy her house....the man with the green eyes, the man she thought was Jake;  he said that his name was Zach.  He had left her his business card.  She remembered clutching it to her heart, afraid to look at it. Ali could not remember anything after that encounter.  It was as if her life stopped right there after she met Zach.  Oh dear heavens; was that my son.....from the future?  How could I have  possible dreamt that?  Yes the universe was playing tricks on me.  To allow my grown son to come from the future to meet me while I  was pregnant with him ?  But why? what was the point of that? I am sure Alex knew about it.
