Chapter 7 - New Album, New City, New Life
Rosie’s P.O.V.
“Shorts?”
“Checked.”
“Skirts?”
“Checked.”
“Sneakers?”
“Um… Checked…? Yeah, checked!”
“Alright, you have packed everything you need.”
“Are you sure? 6 months is a long period of time…”
“You are going to buy like a new closet when you get there anyways.”
“True… Do you think I should pack more shoes?” I whined.
“Rose…” Mike sighted, closing the gap between us. “While you were talking on the phone with Sam, I sneaked your aqua-blue high heels,” he whispered in my ear with a slightly grin on his face.
“You are the best!” I kissed his cheek.
Oh, Mike is such a great guy, I don’t want to let him go… on the other hand, I can’t waste 6 months, pretending we’re in love when we’re not. I’ve been thinking a lot and I know for sure that he doesn’t like me in that way, but I still don’t want to break up with him. Even though there is no more feeling, it’s still a break up. There is no good way to do it, to say it and I have no idea how to break up with Mike. I really hope we will be friends after this, he’s a really great guy and I just can’t lose him, at least as a friend!
I know it’s not the perfect to dump someone, before you leave on a 6-month trip to record your next album, but I just can’t leave things like this at home. It’s now or never. You can do it, Rose. Take a deep breath and tell him.
Mike was on the sofa, his eyes locked on his phone. Well, at least I don’t have to tell him to take a seat…
“Mike…” I started, sitting next to him.
“Huh?” he focused his attention on me. Good. C’mon, Rose, you can do it.
“There is no good way to say it,” I closed my eyes. “I can’t go on like this. I just can’t. I don’t feel there is a ‘we’, I don’t feel any sparks, I don’t feel like that. I don’t feel love…”
I opened my eyes slowly to see his facial expression. He wasn’t shocked or mad. He wasn’t pale and his hands weren’t trembling, despite my other break-ups. His eyes had something special, a spark of hope? I was more confused than him, if he was confused.
“Without any other words, Mike, I’ve decided. We are taking a break. I am taking a break. I hope we will still be friends after this…” I took a pause to see if he wanted to say something. Nothing. “Take care. Good-bye.” I kissed his cheek and stood up.
This was it. The end. One chapter ended, but another one was starting. I was relived, though I was really sad. But this was the best way.
I grabbed my suitcases and looked for the last time at the house. Probably he will pack all my stuff and send it to my penthouse.
“Her name is Jenny.” Mike finally spoke. I was caught off guard, so I dropped my luggage on the floor. My heart started beating faster and the blood was running through my veins my breath was getting heavier and I couldn’t move my hands. Neither my mind, nor my body could work. Was he confessing that he… cheated on me? No, no cheating because we weren’t really a couple. I turned slowly on my heels to see Mike standing there with his phone in his hands and a small smile on his face.
I stepped closer to my ex-boyfriend and the imagine on his phone became clearer. In the picture, there was a girl in a swing. She was a ginger; her wavy red hair was standing perfectly on her shoulders. Under her beautiful emerald green eyes, lots of freckles were on her porcelain white cheeks, giving Jenny countryside air. She was beautiful, I had to admit it, in her mint green dress and a white bow placed in her hair. She was a sweet person and, judging by the huge smile plastered on her face, she was a happy person.
“We met at Starbucks in South Dakota, she lives there. She’s a great person, she really is. I talked to her while I stayed there, I got to know her better and I… I felt in love with her. Of course, she knew about you, about us, and she didn’t want to come between us. I explained her that I’m in love with her, not with you, but she refused to say anything, for our relationship’s sake. But now, that we are over… maybe she’ll agree to be my girlfriend.” He said and I could see in his eyes that he was saying the truth.
“Wow, you… you really love her. And she seems such a nice girl. I know you two will get very well and I really want you to be happy. So… friends?”
“Close friends! Actually, I still love you, like a sister, the sister I’ve never had!” he laughed.
“And you are the brother I’ve never had, big bro!” I hugged him.
“I really hope you’ll have a great time in New York! And who knows, maybe you’ll find ‘the one’ there…”
“Yeah, who knows…” I giggled. “But this doesn’t means you can leave without introducing Jenny to me, mister!” I put on my serious face and waved my point finger in his face.
“She’ll come here in L.A. soon for university, of course you’ll meet her!” he smiled.
I hugged him for the last time and said our good-byes. I was right, Mike really is such a great guy and I know he and Jenny will be lucky to have each other!
