The entire day had been gloomy.
Constant arguments, several days of relentless rain and thunder, long, drawn-out hours, and exhausting daily training had completely worn everyone down. Aizawa had been teaching for what felt like an eternity, droning on while the students of Class 1-A collectively stared at the clock, each second crawling by slower than the last.
The moment the bell rang, it was as if the class moved in perfect synchronization. Chairs scraped loudly against the floor as every student stood at once.
Laughter immediately filled the room as Class 1-A hurriedly packed their bags, the heavy mood lifting just enough to make the end of the school day feel like a small victory. Among the chatter and giggles was a familiar group of five—the so-called "nerds" of the class—walking together as they always did.
"Hey, Iida-kun! Do you perhaps, um... have an umbrella?" Uraraka laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of her head as if she'd suddenly discovered an itch there.
Iida, already striding ahead with rigid posture, didn't even glance back.
Uraraka blinked, then hurried after him and grabbed his arm. "Iidaaa—!"
He let out a quiet sigh and finally turned, faced with her exaggerated pout. Reaching into his backpack with practiced efficiency, he pulled out a second neatly folded umbrella.
"There you go," he said, handing it to her before swiftly reclaiming his arm.
Izuku laughed, shaking his head. "Seriously, Uraraka-san, ya really gotta start bringin' your own umbrella."
"I didn't know it was going to rain!" Uraraka protested, crossing her arms. "Maybe you should check the weather next time, that way we won't have to worry about it." She huffed, quickening her pace to keep up.
"Todoroki sighed softly. "Uraraka... Japan's weather is unpredictable. You should always bring an umbrella."
"Ribbit, correct," Tsuyu chirped with a smile, popping open her own umbrella.
Uraraka groaned.
By the time they reached the bottom floor of the school, Uraraka let out a breathy laugh of relief. "I still can't get over how long that walk is."
Outside, rain poured down relentlessly, thunder rumbling in the distance as lightning cracked across the sky. She stared ahead, already imagining what awaited them at home.
"Oh my All Might," Izuku muttered as he opened his umbrella. "This walk's gonna be rough."
They left together, taking their usual shortcuts—quiet paths away from crowded streets and prying eyes. The rain soaked the pavement, but none of them slowed. Eventually, the familiar sight came into view.
A forest bloomed before them.
Tall, ancient trees loomed overhead, their dense canopy swallowing what little light filtered through the storm clouds. The deeper the forest went, the darker it became, almost pitch black. A rusted chain-link fence stood as the only barrier between the outside world and what lay beyond, overgrown with vines and weeds spilling through cracked concrete.
A small sign swayed in the wind, barely held up by heavy chains.
KEEP OUT, it read, the red letters faded and smeared like dried blood.
Uraraka paused for just a moment, staring at the sign—then smiled softly.
"Hurry up! I don't want to stand in puddles forever," she giggled, hopping over the gate. Her body lifted slightly, floating just above the ground before she caught herself.
"I love this place," Todoroki said quietly as he followed her, freezing a thin layer of ice beneath his feet to keep his shoes clean. "More than anywhere else."
"We all do, kero," Tsuyu agreed. "That's why we chose it."
She hopped onto the fence, inhaled deeply, and leapt gracefully onto a nearby tree branch.
Iida jumped next, landing neatly atop Todoroki's ice, while Izuku followed close behind.
For them, this walk—whether to school or home—was the best part of the day.
The forest was peaceful, hidden from the world. And more importantly, it was where they could see Ari.
Ari was their adopted child, taken in a few years ago after being found beaten nearly to death. Not long after, Todoroki had found another child—a little girl he named Lily.
She had been discovered in an alleyway, barely breathing, covered in cuts and bruises, wearing nothing but a filthy rag dress. She was only four years old... at least, that's what they believed.
Finally, they reached home.
Izuku's phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out, eyebrows knitting together. "A message in the group chat?"
Before he could say another word, a small body suddenly wrapped itself around his legs.
"In exactly one hour," a tiny voice declared excitedly, "we have to pick up Ari from school—and then we can go see the waterfall we found the other day!"
Lily squealed with excitement.
"I know," Todoroki said warmly as he crouched down to her level. "Isn't that exciting, Lily?"
"Yup! Ari's gonna be so happy to see you, kero!" Tsuyu laughed, gently ruffling Lily's hair.
"Did you practice your quirk?" Izuku asked, lifting her effortlessly by the waist and holding her up.
No rain fell beneath the trees—the forest was too dense for that. Iida had made sure of it. He refused to let Ari or Lily get sick, and after a great deal of work, the canopy had become a natural shield. Very little light reached the ground.
Except for Lily's.
"Mhm!" Lily practically yelled.
A small drink of milk formed in her hands, glowing softly. Behind her floated a ball of light—an animal-shaped presence that had been with her for as long as she could remember
"Mami says you're very thirsty," Lily said proudly. "So here!"
She handed the drink to Izuku, who smiled wider than ever.
"Thank you," he said softly, taking a small sip. "That's really good."
The glowing animal pulsed, growing brighter. The forest ahead lit up as the light drifted forward, illuminating their path.
The others followed closely behind, disappearing deeper into the trees—home waiting just ahead.
