My eyes flew open and I was staring at the bunk above me. My whole body was trembling, my fists were clenched, and my palms were sweaty.
"Zeus why are you wearing bunny slippers?" Clovis mumbled in his sleep.
That nightmare was terrifying. Was it warning me or were my fears just trying to control me? Who were those two shadow figures? Why did it feel like I was responsible for the campers being unconcious? My general question, WHAT WAS THAT!? If I tell this dream to anyone else they are going to think I'm nuts. I can't tell anyone. A robin flew through the window and landed on the fireplace mantle. It started singing and when no one got up it started singing louder and louder until it sounded like an emergency siren.
"We're up, we're up, Poplar." Clovis muttered, rubbing his eyes as he sat up.
The robin started looking curiously at a branch dripping milky liquid into bronze bowls, on the mantle. It kept eyeing the bowls like it wanted to take a bird bath.
"Poplar you know that's Lethe water, don't touch it." A hispanic girl scolded.
"What is the Lethe and why is there a robin alarm clock?" I asked my half siblings.
"Oh, Hypnos sends Poplar every morning to wake us up, I wish he wouldn't, but he says even though sleep is good waking is better, because if people weren't awake there would be no sleep, blah blah blah. And anyway, the poplar branch drips water from the River Lethe, the river of the Underworld, the river of forgetfulness, one of Dad's symbols." Another boy replied.
Once everyone was out of bed Poplar flew back out the window, singing a sweet tune. I shook the whole time I was getting dressed, but not from the morning chill. Connor, Brody, and the boy's hisses still rung in my ear.
You caused this Kayla. You did this to us, and everyone. Now you must pay the price.
I shuffled to breakfast with my half siblings. I hung my head in despair. What was I supposed to do. I couldn't just live my life as a lazy Hypnos kid, I had to prove myself.
We all went to our marble table with the poppy carved into it and sat down for a moment. Then surprisingly I noticed Connor walking over to my table.
"Uh, Kayla could I talk to you for a sec, over there?" Connor gestured towards the corner.
My heart did a flip in my chest, and I scolded myself for it. Connor had scooted away when I was claimed by Hypnos, he was just as mean as any Ares kid.
"Sure." I replied, trying to put on my best poker face.
We walked over to the corner and Connor grabbed my hand with a pained expression on his face.
"Kayla, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have acted the way I did at the campfire last night. I really like you. You're pretty, and clever, and just overall great. I-it's just you are nothing like the other Hypnos kids and I just didn't know what to do. I have been a mess since Travis left. We fought in wars together, we almost died together. He was like my twin, my best friend. Now I only play about one prank a week." Connor apologized.
I couldn't just push him away. Travis was his only true family here and now he was off at college. Plus, he was so cute.
"Connor, it's okay. How about we eat lunch at the Canoe Lake tomorrow? I understand if you don't want to do it because it breaks the rules bu-" I was cut short because Connor kissed my cheek.
"See ya there." Connor winked and hurried back to his table.
Bluh, dub, fum, wah. Did that really just happen? Did I really just do that!?
I picked at my blueberry waffle breakfast the rest of the time and thought about Connor.
You caused this Kayla. You did this to us, and everyone. Now you must pay the price. Voices suddenly screeched in my ear, I dropped my fork, and put my hand over my ear. Something was different about the voices it was only two people. Connor's voice was missing this time from the cacophony. I still needed to fix things with Brody, but I am not kissing up to that Ares kid.
"Kayla you okay?" The hispanic girl asked. I found out her name was Rosa.
"Training time!" Chiron called out from the front of the dining pavilion. I ignored Rosa's question because I didn't know how to answer.
Clovis fell asleep multiple times on the way to training. The third time he stumbled, he knocked his head on a rock and didn't get back up. Chiron had a boy and a girl carry him to the infirmary just in case. Wow, he injured himself falling because he nodded off while walking? How does that work? Still I felt bad for Clovis, he was still my brother, maybe not full but half brother.
