Chapter 19 : Old Friend
Two days later, as soon as Mi Qing stepped into the house, she smelled the very strong sweetness of mangoes.
She went into the kitchen and took a peek inside.
There was a large basket of mangoes on the floor, seemingly a few dozens of catties. Xiao Gu was wearing an apron, standing by the stove, and was slicing mangoes.
Mi Qing's pink tongue licked the corner of her mouth and asked, "What are you doing?"
Xiao Gu carefully sliced a mango without looking back at her: "Dried mango."
Mi Qing's eyes moved and landed at the basket of mangoes on the floor and asked again: "Where did you buy so many mangoes?"
Xiao Gu replied, "Someone sent it."
Mi Qing was out of words. Who would be so free as to send him so many mangoes? She thought for a moment, blinked and asked, "It shouldn't be from a girl who secretly loves you, is it?" In order to please him, she was quite willing to pay the cost.
Xiao Gu finally turned his head and glanced at her: "It was from a man."
Mi Qing: "..."
It turned out that Boss Xiao.... Eats both males and females, his market is pretty good.
She chuckled and continued to watch: "Is there anything I can help you with?"
The last time she helped peel spinach, she ate a delicious western meal. Now, if she helps peel mangoes, maybe she will get a share later.
Mi Qing's small abacus crackled. The taste of those last five nibbles of dried mango are still vivid in her mind. Although those were but some bits and pieces in the store, the taste would not be as good as the whole piece.
But Xiao Gu denied her this opportunity: "Little Tainong mangoes are small, and a mango is only sliced into halves, which is a test of skill. You'd better play with Tiantian."
Mi Qing simpered: "Do you need me to help you peel?"
"No, I'm afraid you'll make them too ugly."
Mi Qing: "..."
Then you have fun by yourself!
She turned around petulantly to leave, when Xiao Gu called her again: "Take two mangoes to eat."
Mi Qing was stunned in place, simply overwhelmed by this sudden favor: "Really?"
The corner of Xiao Gu's lips ticked as he stared at her, but there were hints of a smile in his eyes: "It's just two mangoes, do you have to be so surprised?"
It's because they're his mangoes that she's so surprised! "Aren't mangoes your favorite?"
Withdrawing his gaze, Xiao Gu continued focusing on slicing his mangoes: "Don't forget it."
For fear that he'd take his words back, Mi Qing rushed to grab two mangoes and hugged them back to her bedroom.
She always had this feeling that her landlord has a change in character lately, much better than when she first arrived. Mi Qing thought about it while peeling a mango and biting it down.
Yum, a ripe mango is truly sweet and fruity. It will definitely be delicious when dried.
She just doesn't know if she has any share.
Over the next few days, Xiao Gu was tinkering with his dried mango. It was then that Mi Qing realized that the big oven she had always thought was a slightly odd was actually a dehydrator machine.
