It was almost midnight, and a man sat a bottle of water and a bag of beef jerky on the counter in front of Jay, ''that will be $7.30", the man sighed and handed him the money, then picked up his things and left. "you good over there jay?" jay looked over at the door of the walk-in cooler, Tim stood in the doorway with a concerned look on his face, "I'm fine, just tired", but in reality, jay wasn't fine; it had been 2 hours since Brian was supposed to come in for his shift, it wasn't unusual for Brian to be 15 to 30 minutes late, but 2 hours was worrying " Brian should be here by now" said Tim "he's almost 3 hours late".
Not even 10 seconds went by when a loud, shrill ringing erupted from the phone in jay's pocket, he expected it to be the store owner calling to ask why they haven't clocked out yet, but to his surprise, it was Brian, " Hey, sorry I'm late, some stuff came up, I'll be there in 15 to 20 minutes, bye" he hung up, "Hey Tim," jay said " can you take over the register for a second'', Tim walked out of the cooler and sat down at the register as Jay walked outside. Jay sat under the small birch tree behind the gas station, he took the book that he had in his bag and began reading when he heard Brian's car pull into the parking area," sorry I'm late blue jay?" Brian said as he got out of his car, jay got up and went back inside to clock out, he stopped when he found the most horrific sight he had ever laid his eyes upon. Tim was laying in the middle of the floor, well half of him was.
brian stood next to Jay in shock. Jay quickly called 911, and he heard sirens faintly blaring in the distance, at that moment, jay woke up in a cold sweat, thank god it was just a dream, he realized that the sirens he heard were coming from his phone, he breathed a sigh of relief, he swung his legs over his bed, the hard-wood floor was cold beneath his feet and creaked with every step when he touched the doorknob, he stopped before he turned it; he looked over at the picture of him, brian, Tim and Seth, It was the last photo they all took together. He smiled and exited the room. As jay was getting ready for work he heard his phone ring from the other room, he knew who it was before he got to the phone, it was time, "hey jay," Tim sounded like he had been running "I'm not going to make it into work today, so Alex will be there to fill in for me" Tim hang up before jay could respond, jay quickly finished getting ready and left the house, thankfully, the gas station was not very far from his house, it was only about 6 houses away, but to jay, it felt like he was walking for hours when he got into the building, Alex was waiting for him "I'll take care of the register today" Alex said as he sat down on the old wooden stool" you can start restocking or something I don't know".
"thank you for giving me permission to do my job," jay said while chuckling, he proceed to restock the various shelves and hangers with overpriced candy and stale chips, when he got finished, it was time for his lunch break " 15 minutes isn't enough" jay mumbled to himself as he walked over to the door and started back towards his house. he had been walking for about 5 minutes when out of nowhere he felt a slight tap on his shoulder, he turned around to face what tapped him, it was Seth.

Jay was confused, he had watched Seth die 3 months prior.
