Hecate Hardbroom
Azura Moon, Isabella Jones and Mildred Hubble were far from the only witches from a non magical background at Cackle's now. Much to Hecate's surprise, it was Samyuktha Narayanan, a girl from a non magical background who scored the highest marks in the entrance test. Samyuktha was a girl who questioned every aspect of magic in a way she had never done before, and insisted it wasn't much different from Physics, much to Mr. Daisy's delight. The way she questioned something as simple as animal duplication both impressed and annoyed Hecate at the same time.
"Doesn't this defy the law of conservation of mass?"
"How is it possible to create matter out of nothing?"
"Is this the clone of the animal with the anatomy replicated exactly?"
"Why does a clone spell exist separately if we could duplicate stuff like this?"
Hecate wasn't prepared to answer any of this. Never before in her entire witching career had she heard of the law of conservation of mass.
"Magic and science are completely different aspects. Science is a non magical idea, so there is no need for magic to follow the laws of science." Hecate said.
"That's absolute nonsense!" she cried indignantly. "If magic didn't have to follow the laws of physics, we wouldn't be learning Spell Science, would we?"
"Enough! Detention, Miss Narayanan," said Hecate. She wasn't going to have first years behaving as though they owned the place. "If you like Spell Science so much, perhaps you would like to do your detention with Mr. Daisy. I believe that cupboard in his classroom could use cleaning."
"That isn't fair, Miss Hardbroom." said Samyuktha. "All I did was ask a simple question."
"I will be the judge of what is fair and what isn't." said Hecate. "The detention is not for asking the question but for speaking out of turn in a tone that is not tolerated in my classroom. Get on with your potion."
Hecate may not have appreciated the tone Samyuktha used, but she was indeed curious to know the answers to her questions. Clumsy and barmy as Mr. Daisy was, even Hecate was forced to admit he had a brilliant mind. She informed Mr. Daisy of the happenings during Potions class and asked him what he knew.
"Combining atoms! That brilliant girl!" he exclaimed. "The law of conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be transformed. In a duplication spell, the extra atoms are not created but taken from the atmosphere. The potion is what helps transform it to resemble the animal or object to be duplicated. While the outside appearance of the animal in a duplication spell is the same, it is not an exact clone. The Clone spell, as you know, when brewed correctly, is a more complicated version of this which yields more accurate results. The duplication spell is preferred when duplicating small animals and inanimate objects due to its simplicity. The Clone spell is necessary if you need an exact replica of the animal or person inclusive of their anatomy and functions."
Hecate was fascinated by Mr. Daisy's explanation. Perhaps she hadn't given him enough credit.
"Thank you, Mr. Daisy. I expect you to give the same explanation to Samyuktha Narayanan after her detention this evening."
Mr. Daisy nodded vigorously and rushed to his next class. To nobody's surprise he tripped over a broomstick and landed flat on his face sending his books flying in different directions. "Mutating molecules!" he muttered under his breath. He hastily ran around the place picking them up. Hecate merely waved her arms and stacked the books using magic instantly.
"Thank you, Miss Hardbroom!" said Mr. Daisy, breathless.
"You are most welcome." said Hecate drily. She shot him a look of disdain as they parted ways.
A/N: There are a few chapters including this one that I'm just adding for comic relief that have absolutely nothing to do with the plot. Those include mainly the antics of the students, especially the ones from non witching families.
