~ Miles' POV ~
"I have to get to work. I need to get everything done so I can head out with Jenna and her friend tonight."
I frowned down at Ava, still holding her in my arms. "Where? Who else is it?"
"The new bar downtown, and I'm not sure. She just said her friend."
I nodded, trying my best to hide my uneasiness. "I don't..."
Shut the fuck up, idiot, you don't know for sure that he's back. The Chief just said to watch for him. Don't worry her over what could be nothing.
I clenched my jaw, jerking a hand through my sweat-soaked hair. "Be safe."
I stalked out, completely aware that I'd confused the hell out of her as I pushed the locker door open, Hawk glaring over at me as he stood by the benches, a towel slung low on his hips.
"We're going out tonight." I told him, stripping my own shirt off and chucking it to the floor.
"Not in the mood, Miles." He responded shortly with grit in his voice. His entire demeanor had changed the last two months, and while I was mostly sure I knew why, he wasn't the type you could push without expecting a bigger shove back.
Kinda wonder... Am I right?
"Avery's going to the new club tonight with Jenna and her friend."
Hawk bit off a curse, dropping his towel and quickly pulling his clothes on. Always the rebel, instead of the supposed 'uniform' we were supposed to wear of a basic black suit, he wore his signature black jeans and leather jacket.
I chuckled, typical.
"What time?" He asked, stepping around me to slick his hair back in the mirrors behind me.
Called it.
"She'll be late because she'll get caught up at work. Naturally. So maybe eight. Nine. We'll see."
"You're worried Tex Covington is actually back and out for revenge." He stated as I stepped into the shower.
"You're not?"
"She can take care of herself, Miles. She's a strong ass woman."
Well... That was unmistakable pride in his voice.
"Trust me, I know she is. But that doesn't mean I want her trying to fucking go up against that piece of shit by herself. I'm not saying he's definitely back, but I'm also not saying it's not a possibility. When the Chief brought it up yesterday, it just put me on edge. If he is? He's pissed and unstable, Hawk. But he's damn smart, too. And those things don't mix well together when he has a vendetta against me and you. And-"
"And that puts Avery in danger." He finished the sentence for me as I rinsed my hair. He blew out a frustrated sigh, cursing under his breath. "Fine."
The locker room door slammed closed and I rolled my eyes.
Stubborn ass.
Avery had surprised me. When we'd met, I'd known she was smart and driven, not to mention sexy as hell. But over the last two months, I'd watched her constantly, yet subconsciously, check in on me. Care for me. She'd always made sure I'd eaten and gotten sleep, but would then close off a bit or get irritated when I'd asked her the same.
