The week Tendou got his cast off was busy. He had to work overtime and catch up on lots. He couldn't visit the hospital, but he texted and called y/n non-stop. Tendou planned to ask out y/n at the end of the week.
So on Sunday, he brought y/n white flowers with red tips and y/n's favorite chocolates, excitedly nervous for y/n's answer.
When he got to the door of y/n's room he saw a member of y/n's family outside the door crying, worried he opened the door to y/n's room, y/n's mom and dad were crying next to the hospital bed, y/n themselves looked even sicker than before, Tendou's color drained as everything clicked in his head. y/n wasn't just about to die. Y/n is dying.
He started tearing up, for the first time since departing with his best friend Ushijima, y/n saw him and weakly reached out for his hand, smiling at him as tears ran down their deathly pale cheeks, Tendou noticed that y/n's hand was colder than normal.
"why, why couldn't we have met sooner y/n, why," Tendou asked sobbing.
"We did." y/n said, cupping the boy's tear-stained cheek."what are you talking about y/n," Tendou asked through his sobs,"satori, I've known you since high school. I was your biggest fan. I came to all your games and cheered for you. Don't you realize I'm in love with you?" y/n started.
"I never told you in high school, you would've never said yes, you didn't even notice me... but when I was later diagnosed with a fatal disease, I knew what I wanted to spend my last days doing... confessing to you." y/n said weakly with voice cracks erupting every other word they spoke.
"you said you were in good condition" Tendou's words were so shaky they were almost impossible to understand"I'm sorry for lying. I didn't want you to worry, but I always knew I never had 30 years. all I knew was that this was my last year." y/n said, feeling guilty
"you will be fine though. It's just a bump to get past right?" Tendou sobbed, denying everything, and placing his hand on y/n's that was cupping his cheek.
"no Tendou, it's the end of my road" y/n sadly said"please y/n stay for me, I need you, I felt empty and you filled me with joy and purpose... I, I love you, I can't let go of you yet... please just don't go" Tendou said with a quivering voice. His legs weren't even able to sand at this point. He kneeled by the side of the bed, clutching onto her hand gently and talking through his sobs."Tendou, please promise me, next time we meet, you'll come to find me. even if I have to win you over again, it will be worth it. That's all I want" y/n said, their eyes slowly starting to closeTendou nodded his head "I promise y/n."
the soft grip on his hand slowly faded as a couple of doctors and nurses came in. Tendou couldn't move, he couldn't think, he couldn't even breathe. All he could do was watch with teary vision, silently letting buckets of his tears glide down his cheeks. He never experienced something like this. No amount of bullying or goodbyes could ever compare to the pain he felt. he started shaking uncountably, he looked at y/n's family with eyes and let out a simple "I'm so sorry... please excuse me." his voice cracking almost as much as y/n's
He went up to the hospital roof. He sat next to where y/n would sit. he broke down, until the sunset, he had wiped his tears and watched the sun slowly go down. It reminded him of y/n, how they would watch the sunsets together.
He had to face the sad truth... he was alone again. It never used to bother him, but now he was conflicted. He found comfort in being alone but yearned for company... not just anyone's... but y/n's.
He lived his life empty. He felt like he could never find someone like y/n. Every Friday on his way home from work, he would drop a box of chocolates at their grave.
Y/n loved those.
