June 1978
James and Sirius could've moved into the Order of the Phoenix like everyone else but they just wanted to go back to the Potter Manor for one sole reason. They've been itching to go back to the Evans household ever since the start of September last year, when they started to realize how much they missed Daisy's presence.
Of course, she told them she wouldn't be there but James and Sirius just wanted to wish, that maybe she'd missed them too much and she wanted to come back. But they wouldn't know until they knew.
"I can't believe she let you keep the car," Sirius grumbled. Although he had his own motorcycle, he was still pissed that Daisy gave the convertible to James rather than Sirius.
"The only reason I have it is because you can't drive for shit, Pads," James replied as he grabbed the convertible keys from the small dish by his front door. They exited the Potter Manor, which was more quiet than usual ever since their parents passed in March.
James and Sirius both calmly walked over to the convertible by the sidewalk, not running or sprinting like they used to. Ever since Daisy left, they started to hang out with Lily more because James was dating her. It made them more mature and if Daisy could see them now, she would call them boring.
Silently, James drove through the neighborhood with Sirius in the passenger seat. Everything seemed more quiet and more peaceful. In other words, or Daisy's words, it was lame and pathetic. James and Sirius didn't even realize how boring it was because there was no one to tell them.
Their younger selves started to come back as James pulled up to the Evans household. The two hopped out of the car, slammed the doors, and raced towards the modern house.
They laughed as they pushed each other out of the way. James sprinted past the door and went over to the side of the house instead, causing Sirius to follow. They both picked up small pebbles on the ground and threw them at the window they remembered so well.
There was a red curtain on the other side of the window, blocking James and Sirius from seeing inside. James secretly hoped that the curtain would be pushed to the side and the window would be lifted upwards. He'd hoped that Daisy would reveal herself and tell them that she was staying at home for the summer or maybe for forever.
But the curtain was never pushed aside, the window was never lifted upwards, and Daisy never revealed herself. James threw a pebble at her window again, and again, and again, his smile fading more and more each time.
He would've thrown pebbles for days, even weeks if it meant that his favorite girl would open the window.
Sirius finally gave up and pulled James' hand down to prevent him from throwing the pebbles anymore. "We could just knock on the front door," Sirius suggested.
He knew that Daisy would never open the door but it was nice to give James a bit of hope, just a sliver. It gave Sirius some hope himself because maybe Daisy still was there.
James nodded and they made their way over to the front door of the Evans household. James politely rung on the doorbell and his girlfriend, Lily Evans, opened it. She smiled widely and brought James into a long hug, then Sirius into a shorter hug.
James didn't say it aloud but he was very disappointed when Lily was the one to greet him. Don't get him wrong, he loved Lily, but she was everything Daisy claimed she was. She was a bore and she was a square and she was as realist as a realist gets.
Lily's lips were moving as she talked but James couldn't hear any of it. Just like Daisy taught him to, James listened for a specific voice. Every other voice was tuned out as he searched for hers.
