I was sitting at my dining room table, drinking black coffee and reading the newspaper. I never used to enjoy reading it. I always found it excruciatingly boring, the kind of stuff that only losers and nerds read. But it was delivered that morning, like it was every morning, and I was looking for anything that would keep my mind off of the fact that Deku had finally made a fortune and was currently living in one of the biggest houses on the island, and he had refused to tell me how he'd gotten there.
I had just finished reading an excruciatingly dull article on the state of the stock market when I heard the sound of the door opening, and footsteps coming towards the dining room.
"Good morning, Bakugo," Kirishima said, sitting down in the chair next to mine.
"So you're above knocking now, are you?" I grumbled, not looking up at him.
"It was unlocked, and I was too curious about your relationship with Izuku Midoriya to wait for someone to come answer the door," Kirishima said eagerly.
I closed the newspaper and met his eyes. "How are you up this early? You just spent the whole night at a massive party."
"You know me, I'm tough," Kirishima said. He grabbed my coffee cup and took a sip. "So. Spill."
"What if I don't want to spill?"
"Bakugo," Kirishima said dryly, unamused. "You promised."
"Did I?"
Kirishima huffed. "Why must you make this so difficult?"
I closed the distance between us, kissing him softly.
"Okay, that was nice," Kirishima conceded. "But I know that you're just trying to distract me."
I kissed him again, and he groaned.
"You're shameless."
"I know," I said, leaning in a third time.
This time, though Kirishima pulled back. "Just tell me, Bakugo. I promise I won't judge you, whatever it is."
I sighed, leaning back in my chair. "Fine. Deku and I were friends, back when I lived on the mainland."
"See, that wasn't so hard," Kirishima said. "Why were you so upset by him being here?"
I frowned down at the table. "I don't wanna talk about it."
"Bakugo."
I groaned loudly. "We used to always talk about living here, when we got older. When I was the only one who achieved it, Deku promised me that he would catch up to me someday. He was a loser. I didn't think he'd do it."
"But he did," Kirishima said.
"Yeah," I said, meeting Kirishima's eyes again. "And he won't tell me how the hell he managed to do it."
"Why does he have to?"
"Because..." I hesitated, struggling to find the right words. "Because...I don't know. I guess I want to know how a loser like him managed to catch up to me."
Kirishima scanned my face, as if looking for something, and his lips quirked up into the hint of a smile.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing," Kirishima said. "What do you want to do today?"
"Go to the library and find out all I can about Deku."
"Are you serious?" Kirishima asked me.
"Of course I am," I said. "I want to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible."
