The End? (Season 4, Part 20)

We continued to fight for what felt like years. Titan after Titan we fought, but Jean, Pieck and I slowly edged closer to Eren's nape.

Eventually, Pieck ran out of endurance and her hand was cut off as she emerged from the nape of her Titan before it was destroyed for the hundredth time. 

Jean quickly caught her, scolding her against her words claiming she could go on.

"Tch!" I was just so, so, close, but with every nape of a Titan I cut three more jumped right at me. I was no closer from where I started. I quickly strategized a risky plan to have Reiner carry me over, but looking back I saw he was pinned down by all the Warhammer Titans, about to be beheaded.

Jean noticed and tried to head towards him with Pieck in one arm, while risking his life from several Jaw Titans jumping at him. Getting distracted from my current task, I jumped after the two Jaw Titans lunging at Pieck and Jean when suddenly 2 more Titans jumped ahead- only to not hit me, but the two Titans who were attacking Jean and Pieck!

The two Titans looked almost the same, just with different colored hair. I recognized one of them to be the previous Jaw Titan I cut up at Liberio with Levi.

A sudden boom had me looking in the direction more downward of Eren's spine: Bertholdt's Titan had swept all the attacking Titans down there off the side.

What in the world was happening?

I shook my head, finally getting back to focus from my distraction. "Jean! I'm going to blow Eren's head off, you protect Pieck!"

Having the protection of the two Jaw Titans to help me out, I cut and sliced my way towards Eren's nape once more, putting every ounce of muscle, determination, and energy I had into reaching my destination.

I didn't dare look back: the lives of the entire world- Levi, my squad, my son Leo.. they all depended that I succeeded on this very moment!

Just when I finally arrived, the whole skeleton shook. Considering I was right there I took the second to look back, considering Jean and Pieck had already caught up- Pieck was already back in shape.

My eyesight barely good enough to see, I saw Zeke's head flying through the air, Levi who was in the opposite direction of the flying head, he swerved back onto Falco's Titan.

A wave of relief washed over me. This wasn't the time to lose footing, though!

I grabbed onto the lever of the explosives wrapped around Eren's nape, gulping hard. Levi had just done his part of carrying out the 5 year dying promise we had to Erwin, yet, after everything we've been through and what I've said and determined.. I hesitated to push down the lever.

"Valeri! What are you doing! Do it!" Jean shouted at me, fending off the remaining stray Titans with Pieck, Reiner, and the Jaw Titans.

My throat felt dry. I looked up solemnly at Eren's giant Titan head, before furrowing my brows. My eyes felt too dry to let out tears for Eren or the act I was about to do.

"Eren." The world seemed to go silent in my ears. I only heard a slight ringing. Eren probably didn't hear me right now, but I still took my final moments to say a fraction of my thoughts I wanted to tell him.

"Go to hell, you suicidal blockhead."

I slammed down hard on the lever, breaking it in half.

The sound returned to my ears, however disappearing into a loud ringing once again from the impact of the explosion. I hadn't braced myself, stupidly enough, and was barely able to react in time to anker my gear into one of Eren's ribs.

Like Gabi said, the strange giant centipede looking thing writhed and squirmed desperately out of the wound, and started to shoot towards Eren's head.

"Fuck! It's going for Eren's head!"

Not even before I moved a muscle, Reiner leapt down and grabbed the strange centipede thing. He wrestled it, pushing it away from Eren's severed head.

"JEAN! VALERI!" I heard Connie's voice from behind, seeing everyone safely on Falco's Titan. "WE NEED TO GET AWAY QUICK! ARMIN'S GONNA BLOW THESE BONES TO PIECES!"

Falco swerved under me first, and I reluctantly dropped onto him and embraced Levi- but Jean faltered. "Wait-! But Reiner!"

"The Armored Titan should be able to handle the Colossal Titan's explosion!" Pieck suddenly relieved, emerging from her Titan's nape. "And, most of all, Reiner's prepared for the consequences. To let this opportunity get away would be to let that go to waste."

Jean nodded, sweating, and finally dropped onto Falco's back along with Pieck. Then, we started to get the hell out of there by flying away as far as we could from the explosion site.

I looked back with no regret, yet no sadness, anger, or happiness. Eren was my childhood friend. He was dear to me like a little brother.

Yet... this is how it has to end. If only this weren't the only way.

"Goodbye, Eren." I mutter under my breath, my eyes glued to Armin's small figure.

And then he transformed.
