I don't know if this is exactly allowed on this sub, but I really wanted to put something together involving the lore. I've been reading (and re-reading) the series for the last week now.
Most of this is just questions and thoughts. I'd love to encourage some conversation as we dissect what we can of the story.
I'm probably the worst person to try this, but I'll do my best. I also apologize as I've never done formatting before.
FACELESS MEN
There are numerous accounts of these creatures throughout the stories. Each one tends to interact in a different way and so I will treat (most) of them as individuals.
"I could see this line open up on his throat. It stretched up to his ears, and his head tilted back and he smiled at me with his throat."
• The Hairy Man
It's noted that he has either no face or "a weird face." The general age of it's victims is no older than 5 years of age. It's noted that a "blurry man" took a child of over 5 years and let him go. I'm uncertain if the blurry man and harry man are one in the same, as the blurry man had no eyes. It's also noted that the children are typically found crammed into rocks.
He was allowed to wander around a very specific clearing, but when he tried to go further, the fuzzy man would 'get > mad and yell real loud even though he didn't have a mouth'. When the kid got scared at night, the fuzzy man 'made it go brighter' and gave him the twig bundle. He eventually let him go as he "wasn't the right kind."
• Black-Eyed People
Most of the creatures are silent or speak to people through their thoughts from my understanding. The black-eyed people are the only ones that tend to mimic or repeat sounds. The amalgamation from the story was never described as having "black eyes" but was not described as faceless either. It's mouth was also lopsided instead of a slit of the throat. I believe its a safe assumption that these are a different breed of creature. Both creatures are also able to take extremely long steps or move with great speed.
the man was made of some kind of amalgamation of raw meat and hair. As if someone had scooped up roadkill and molded it into the vague shape of a man. The face was lumpy and only a rough approximation of a human face. The thing opened its lopsided mouth, and from it came the sound of the gun the hunter had fired.
• Climbers
These are always found on top of mountains. They tend to mimic death or dying. No account of a Climber actually causing harm has been found.
• White-Eyes with Antlers
These creatures need the victim to actually speak to them before they can do anything. They can be completely ignored with absolutely no harm caused and speak to the person mentally.
STAIRS
"They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles, and conditions. Some are pretty dilapidated, just ruins, but others are brand new. The stairs don't go up infinitely, or farther than I can see, but some sets are taller than others."
The true evil of the series. In some rare cases they can be found upside down but we have no information on if this changes their ability. There are so many incidents of possible stair-abduction that I will limit this to what I feel are the more important ones:
• One child was found at the bottom of the steps with perfect circles punched out of his organs (all but the heart and lungs.) His scent was missing in different "grid" patterns in the woods. This shows that the stairs can completely erase you from select areas of reality.
• A whale was found with a giant cut from it. This clearly shows that the stairs are impartial on where they can go.I could see that his nose and lips and part of his forehead were all gone. It was like they'd been sliced clean off. He was bleeding bad, and I saw that the knees of his pants were red too. He looked me over and he saw my Walkman and he screamed. He just kept babbling and touching his face, and I realized he wasn't wearing the right clothing. He had some kind of weird grey cloth jacket and almost formal pants on, and the jacket had these weird buttons and red borders on it. -- the only thing I could really understand: 'Don't touch me! You'll make me go back there!'
• I'm uncertain if the man traveled through time in this or simply came from a different place in the world. His fear of the Walkman looks as though whatever took him had electronics with them. Also the fact he didn't want to go back is interesting. Which leads to the next talking point
The Orange Place
he said something about how 'the little sad boy' had wanted him to come play. He said the little boy wanted to 'trade' so he could 'go home'. He kept saying that. 'It was cold out there. My legs was frozen. It was cold out there. It's cold in me.'
Nothing is really known about this place besides it tends to be freezing. It would seem a logical connection that the faceless men come from here. It also does not run on the same reality of time as people will be gone for weeks or months and return as though no time was lost. It's also assumed this is the place the man in the gray suit feared.
Random Bits
There's a small valley where a there's almost a sensation like a plane depressurizing. we hear the loudest sound I've ever heard in my life. It's almost like a freight train passing directly by us, but it's coming from every direction at once, including above and below us. He screams something to me, but I can't hear him over this deafening roar.
It's very clear that the Forest Service fully knows of these problems and hides them. One supporting statement is when a dead child is retrieved from a tree and they claim it's "Evidence." They also planned to block the trail that the whale was found on until it rotted away. It's uncertain if they simply fear the creatures or if they know something more about the issues.
There are also reports of people disappearing while climbing trees. I found this very interesting as it seems most creatures are not bound by gravity, but are bound to the forest itself. One instance supporting this is of a child walking 20 feet through the air while cradling his spine as a baby.
Deaths from tree wells. There's nothing supporting that this is caused by creatures, but they are terrifying.
And finally, Moose are big fuckers.
