Junmyeon stepped out of his car in a hurry and rushed into the property. As expected, Mrs. Ma’s face appeared from behind the closed door to greet him. She was his housekeeper for almost as long as his marriage with Eunji and it started when she said she was lonely in the house when he went to work, so he hired someone to keep her company.
Although, Eunji refused to have the hired housekeeper to move in full time with them because she feared that it will take the quality time with the housekeeper’s own family. She was also the one who scheduled Mrs. Ma to come three days a week to accompany her, and that day happened to be Tuesday, which they anticipated Mrs. Ma to come.
But there was no Eunji that day.
“Do you need me to stay the night, Sir?” She asked politely as she placed the mug of coffee on the countertop. Junmyeon snapped out of his reverie and nodded a solemn thank you to the woman.
It was quiet for a while, as Junmyeon pondered over the simple question. Everything seemed to be harder to figure when the person that they were talking about were not there. “No, you’re here for Eunji but she’s not here, I think you can go home once you’re done with the chores.”
“Alright.” She nodded and was about to continue with her job when she realised something.
“You know, sir, I don’t know if I’m in any place to say this, but Eunji… she…” Mrs. Ma’s gaze lowered, a dejected look was conspicuous on her face, deepening the lines on her forehead. She had treated Eunji as her own daughter since they first met each other; her heart broke for the girl who lost her entire family in a single night but still managed to always find the good meaning in life.
Junmyeon’s full attention was on the older lady. He had never seen her wearing any other expression than composed and cheerfulness when Eunji was around her, joking and laughing with her. But that evening was different. She was worried and mostly sad. The girl that had won her old heart with her amiable personality, have been a little bit too quiet.
Mrs. Ma took a deep breath, and sat on the empty stool in front of where Junmyeon was perched, waiting impatiently on what she was about to say. She looked at the younger man in the eyes, searching for any signs that the couple’s marriage might be facing vulnerability.
“Eunji…she…truthfully…have been locking herself on your bedroom more.” Junmyeon’s eyebrows crinkled at Mrs. Ma’s words. “She…sometimes I heard sniffling inside of the locked door, and I tried to call out to her, but she would dismiss me and tell me that she’s okay. Although I know she’s not.”
Junmyeon swallowed hard. “H-how long have it been since she started acting oddly?”
Mrs. Ma shrugged slowly, “a few weeks?” She looked at him, “do you have any problem with each other? If you do, please resolve it immediately. It’s not healthy at all, for her to keep her feelings to herself. I can see it eating her from inside out. Did you notice how thin she is when you hold her at night? She looked like she was gliding with her feet on the ground, she have lost so much weight!” She sighed exasperatedly.
