"That's not possible."
Evan raised a brow at me. "It's on my desk. He wrote me a letter."
"No he didn't."
"Yes he did," He scoffed, walking over to his desk and flashing me a ripped envelope with a piece of paper sticking out.
I immediately stood up and went to grab it from him. Evan, however, quickly yanked it away, stuffing it into his back pocket.
"Let me read it."
"No."
"Evan-"
He rolled his eyes and moved to the opposite end of the room. "I don't know who you think you are but you can't just waltz into my room and start making demands."
I didn't think I was being unreasonable. Even Evan had to know that Cormac was closer to me than him. I deserved to know what was on his letter. Maybe it would tell me something I didn't know.
"I'm not asking for a lot."
"You're asking to read the letter my best friend left me before he killed himself. I think that counts as a lot."
I scoffed at his words. "Best friend? You hardly knew him."
"Don't go there, Emily. You know nothing."
I shrugged. "Then prove me wrong and let me read your letter. To see how 'close' you two were."
"I know what you're trying to do. How would you like if I asked to read your letter?"
"I didn't get a letter..."
Evan went quiet.
I didn't really mind when I thought only Cormac's parents had received goodbye letters from him. But Evan? Evan Watts over me? It was salt in a wound that was already struggling to heal. No, not salt. Acid. Strong acid.
Was my entire friendship with Cormac one-sided? Did he actually secretly hate me? Was I just a burden in his life? The pain was unbearable.
"I'm just trying to understand him, Evan. Because... I thought I knew him but it seems like there's something major about his life that I'm learning everyday and it makes me feel like a shitty friend. Cory was my light. And without him I'm just blindly moving in an aimless direction."
Evan sank down to the floor as the sound of footsteps echoed down the stairs. His grandfather was gone. I could probably leave.
He remained silent but a pensive look was painted on his exhausted face. Like he was about to tell me something. At this point I would have taken any information. Heck, I would have been happy just learning about his favourite fast-food order (I thought it was a double cheeseburger but maybe that was another thing I was wrong about).
"Okay. Um, sit down," Evan finally said, gesturing to the spot beside him.
I sat down and faced him.
"I never thought I'd be the one telling you this. Cory wanted to tell you but I didn't want anyone to know. It was safer that way."
