One shot 2: Fluff, very light angst

Prompt: one person doing or talking about something they really love, while the other one watches and listens, smiling softly at how adorable the other is.

~~

Atsushi loves cats. Like, l o v e s cats.

Back in his orphanage days, everyone found it annoying when he would start talking about them, resulting in him being punished, so he just stopped talking about them all together.
Even when he was accepted into the Armed Detective Agency, he still wouldn't express his huge love for cats. He would keep it to himself most of the time. At the very most, he would just simply state that he liked cats, and left it at that.
But, that all changed a few months into dating Dazai. The man would always encourage him to talk more about the things he liked, and he would. He felt safe. Comfortable to finally let out all of the cooped up stuff in his brain.

~~

Dazai was currently in the kitchen, making dinner for him and his love. He had just gotten done setting the table when something caught his attention. He could hear the faint voice of his lover, talking in the living room.
At first he thought that he was on his phone, but up in entering the room, he realized that the boy was talking to himself.
He could see that he was having trouble forming what words to say, and that he was having a hard time trying to talk to just himself, so he made his presence known by entering the room. Upon noticing the man enter the room, Atsushi focused his attention on him, haulting his conversation with himself.

Dazai smiled sweetly at his lover. "Hi kitten."

"Oh, Hi Dazai!"

Dazai sat down on the couch. He gently maneuvered his lover onto his lap, holding him close, making the younger boy squeak. Dazai chuckled.

"Whatcha doin?" Dazai asked in a playful tone.

"Nothing. Just thinking."

Dazai bit his lip. He knew the boy really wanted to talk, but he knew that he also didn't know how to start without seeming annoying.
Well, the truth is.. He wasn't annoying. Dazai never thought his seemingly meaningless talk was useless. He thought it was good for the boy, so he would always encourage it.

"Do you want to talk?"

Atsushi looked at the man with a confusing expression. "What do you mean?" His previous expression morphed into worry. "I'm I in trouble?"

Dazai shook his head, chuckling slightly. "No kitten. You just seem restless, and from what I can see, which is a lot because I'm smart, you desperately want to talk about something."

Atsushi sulked. "Y-- Yeah.. But I don't want to annoy you."

Dazai stopped him. "Ah ah ah. Don't give me that. You won't. I promise. Now, from what I could see from your recent behavior.." Dazai sat up straighter, looking the boy in the eyes and smiling.

"Cats."

Atsushi blinked. "Huh? What?"

"You wanted to talk about cats. So talk to me about cats."

Atsushi's eyes glistened. "Really? Can I?"

Dazai's smile grew. "Yes, sweetie. Talk to me. I'll listen to everything."

Atsushi squealed and wiggled around like an excited child, and then started to mindlessly babble about cats. His extensive knowledge of the feline species was quite impressive, Dazai had to admit. And, it was quite adorable to see his lover all happy and excited to talk about something he loves so much. Adorable, yet sad. It was sad, his past. The fact that he couldn't do something as simple as talking about cats.

"And their little paw pads! They're so cute! I mean, don't get me wrong, the whole cat is cute, but the pads!!

Oh! And their eyes! Their beautiful! I heard somewhere that if you look into your cat's eyes, it calms you down. Or maybe that was dogs.. Hmm... I don't know.. Well anyways..."

He continued talking and talking, a smile on his face. Dazai couldn't help but smile as well at how adorable his lover was and how happy he was. It made his heart feel good inside.

~~

In the middle of Atsushi's rave about felines, his stomach growled. He immediately stopped and his face went red. He hadn't payed to much attention to the time, or the last time he ate, so he didn't know if he would be hungry.
Well, he was. And he was embarrassed. He folded into himself, growing reder by the second. Dazai chuckled and gently patted the boy's hair.

"Hungry, sweetie?"

Atsushi slowly nodded, still blushing.

"Alright. I made some food. In here or in the kitchen?"

"Mmm.. Can we watch a movie while we eat?"

"Of course. Sit tight while I go get our food."

Dazai exited the living room. He was gone for a few minutes before he entered back into the living room, holding two plates of Fettuccine Alfredo and garlic bread. He made his way back to the couch and put the plates down onto the table. He grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, looking for a movie.
They eventually settled on a silly romcom, sat back, and ate their food. Occasionally, Atsushi would start talking about cats again in the middle of scenes in the movie, which Dazai thought was adorable.
It was a perfect night.

They eventually finished their dinner, layed on the couch for a little while longer, before Dazai carried the sleeping weretiger to their bedroom and cuddled up to him.

He fell asleep knowing that his baby was safe in his arms, and that he knew that he could talk whenever he wanted. Dazai would always listen.
