A six year old Atsushi and his mother were walking out of a convenience store when he saw them. A group of people holding up signs that said things like; "love is love", " being straight was my phase", and "god loves the gays". Obviously curious, he turned to his mother.
"Mommy? What are they doing?" He asked, pointing to the group.
Atsushi watched as his mother looked at the group, giving them a dirty look. He didn't understand why. What did they do wrong? What were they doing in the first place? What did the signs say? He didn't understand any of it. Hm, maybe it was something bad? Because his mommy did like it and she was always right... Right?
Years later..
His mom was wrong. They weren't doing anything wrong, and Atsushi knew that now. Now at fifteen, he realized that it was a pride event, and that it was for things like gay marriage and trans rights. That didn't seem too bad, to him at least. His mother however, had different opinions. Every day she would come he from work and complain about things such as pride events at her work, at Atsushi's school, in the news, essentially stuff she shouldn't be concerned about. Atsushi tried to convince her that but to no avail. She wouldn't listen. She stood by her opinion, and so did the rest of the family. They were the same. Not the best situation. Especially if you had just realized you were gay oh wait that's Atsushi's situation.
Dammit.
He had realized he was different a few months back, when he saw a cute boy with brunette hair in school. He was a few grades above him, and he was 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘦... He looked online for reasons he might be attracted to boys and came to a strong conclusion..
He was in fact gay. Gay and in the closet still. In a homophobic household. With a crush on a boy he doesn't even know. Could things get worse?
Suddenly, the front door opened and then immediately slammed shut. "Those gross people are out there again! With their stupid signs, and stupid rainbows.."
Yes, things could in fact get worse.
{Time skip}
Three years really makes a difference, especially for Atsushi. Now, he's moved out, gone no contact with his family, and had a good paying job at a detective agency. He was also in a very loving and committed relationship with his high school crush, Osamu Dazai. The first boy he ever had a crush on. The first boy to ever make him realize he was gay.
The first person he ever loved.
They had been dating for a few months and finally it was June, Pride Month. A month that Atsushi was excited to celebrate ever since he came to realize he was gay. And now he got to celebrate it with the best boyfriend ever! How amazing!
"Ooh! It looks so exciting!!" Atsushi was practically bouncing in his seat on the way, too excited to sit still. He, along with Dazai because the two like to match, was wearing a white crop top, black shorts, with rainbow suspenders and black shoes. In the back, they packed a cute picnic, along with their pride flags; a bisexual and non-binary one for Dazai, and a gay man one for Atsushi.
Once they arrived, they picked out a cute spot to sit and watch the parade, and relaxed. Atsushi was sat comfortably in Dazai's lap, with a wide smile on his face that Dazai loved. The two were munching on sandwiches, and occasionally playing animal crossing in between shows and things. Overall, it was a great day.

The day ended with the two driving home, and collapsing in bed. Cuddled into his lover's chest, Atsushi reflected on the day, and the past fewyears of his life. So much happened, and he still needed to process some things from his past, but he couldn't be more happy with where he was now. Out, proud, and in a happy and loving relationship.
He fell asleep in the arms of his beloved, greatful that he stood up to his mother, and greatful to his younger self for surviving to this point.
