E I D  K A  C H A A N D

Today amid the busy bazaar of the evening
Where the owners of the thelas and shops served their long-awaited customers

When the alto-cumulus clouds above had started drifting apart; bidding their goodbyes
Making me take big steps towards my house where my camera lies

When the evening glow caressed my pale skin into a soft beige tone
Making me stare at it a little longer

While the crescent moon could be seen shining
From under the canopy of bare branches of the neem tree

I spotted you
I didn't know if it was a mild occurrence
Or a strategically planned event by destiny itself
But whatever it was
It made me forget about the moon above
And believe in the power of love,
one-sided

'Eid ka Chaand', that's what your glimpse was to me
After which I turned back on the heels of my feet
Put the hood over my head
And with a tight-lipped giddy smile,
A spring in my steps in the cold winter evening
I walked the steps towards my home
With a glimpse of my 'Eid ka Chaand' in vision

The phrase 'EID KA CHAAND' is a Hindi idiom that translates to the meaning similar to the idiom 'ONCE IN A BLUE MOON'.

In the poem above, the admirer describes his/her emotion after getting a glimpse of the person he/she admires. It portrays the yearning of an individual for something 'forbidden' which the person knows is out of their reach yet can't suppress their ever-growing yearning.
