Chapter Eight
Reagan
Reagan loved her father. That didn't change the fact that he was behaving like a pain in the butt, of the highest order.
After listening to a lecture for two hours over the disrespectful way she had behaved, the carelessness of her actions, and how ungrateful she was being. Reagan had, had enough.
She apologized, because arguing wasn't an option. The quickest way out of trouble in her case was to fake it. "I'm sorry," she tried sounding sincere but at this point the words were all that mattered.
He grumbled on for a few more minutes, in his closing complaints about everything she was doing wrong, he then hugged. "You are never going to be a better person if you don't change." looking her in the eyes, he hugged her once more then went into the living room to complain to her mother how everything she was doing wrong was her fault.
Once he was out of sight she rolled her eyes. Reminding herself that he loved her in his own way, she considered his words. Even though she knew he loved her too. She had to take his council with a grain of salt. 'I am not perfect, never claimed to be, yet somehow I'm expected to achieve it.' she ranted in her mind.
Her room was her sanctuary. A place she could hide from the world and it's problems, where it didn't matter how stupid she acted, or how embarrassed she had been. This was where she reigned supreme. The door shutting was quiet and almost unnoticeable, but the feeling of entering this silent familiar room was Nirvana.
"Ahhhhh," she sighed in relief. Jumping onto her bed, she burrowed under her covers and rubbed her feet together until they were warm. Now that she was comfortable she pulled her phone from her pocket. 2 text messages. 'wonder who it is,'
The first was from Claire telling her that "if you think your going to get away without telling me in excruciating detail what was going on today, then you have lost your ever loving mind." 'Ooookayy saving that explanation for later'
The Second was from an unknown number. "Your beauty astounds me, with eyes as blue as the sea,"
'my eyes are brown,' shaking her head she continued, curious as to what this poet was thinking.
"Hair like the waves of wheat, I long to touch it when we meet,"
'creeper,'
"At long last our love with be true, whether we'll be together it's all up to you.- Secret Admirer"
'Who in the world? Christian? No way. This was too corny even for him. Wasn't it?' she curled up tighter pulling the blanket in almost over her head.
'I don't wanna think about this right now,' she plugged her phone in and settled into to sleep.
The rest of the week she avoided Christian as subtlely as she could without actually making a cross with her fingers or hissing at him if he came near. It wasn't like she thought he was Satan, but 'even the devil disguises himself as an angel of light 2Cor 11:14. My scripture quoting Grandma would be so proud.'
Laina had to be towed home, at Reagan's own expense of coarse. Another lesson from her father. 'Whatever,' The only saving grace in the matter was that she had been able to catch a ride to school with Charlie and Ryan everyday.
Charlie and Ryan were like the brothers she never had. Sometimes the ones she never asked for. "So," Charlie broke into her thoughts "What's this I hear about the new guy hitting on you?" 'I'm gonna get you Clarissa Howl. And your little dog too.' she cackled like a witch in her mind.
Clarissa and Ryan were brother and sister, and Charlie was best buds with Ryan so if she had blabbed it was only a matter of time before they would have confronted her about it.
"Guys, seriously, it's nothing to worry about. I've made it clear I'm not interested."
Pulling her lips in her mouth she thought back to that day in the parking lot in the rain. 'Yeah Reighan real clear. You made it crystal clear you would love to kiss that boy after knowing him for only two days. Ya hussy.' she scowled at her thoughts. 'that's mean,'
'am I wrong?' they answered
"That's good because we would be perfectly willing to mess up his pretty face if necessary." Charlie assured her, while Ryan nodded emphatically demonstrating said pounding by throwing his fist into his hand. "You guys are stupid," But she had to admit she loved them. "But you love us anyways," Ryan crooned making kissy faces at her.
He was a Freshman to their Senior. She grinned shoving a hand in his face. "hey" he cried pushing her away. They pulled up to the school.
"We better get going or we are gonna be late," Charlie said, tossing her bag over the car to her. Charlie was a junior, but he shared some of her AP classes.
"Ok I'll see you guys at Lunch," Ryan shouted running to his own class.
The hallways were almost empty when they walked through the main doors. "I've got my books. I'll meet you in there." Charlie whispered, already trying to avoid getting into trouble.
He was such a good boy.
Reagan ran to her locker and was turning the combination when a hand slammed directly in front of her face causing her to jump at least a foot.
"What is your problem?" she hissed, glaring at the culprit.
Christian glowered at her, "Why have you been avoiding me?"
"I don't know what your talking about." 'When in doubt play stupid.' His eyes narrowed, shifting his weight he turned walking towards her.
"Really? That wasn't you I saw last week, turn completely around and go the opposite direction when she saw me in the hall." He stalked forward backing her into the lockers.
'What is with this guy and having me cornered?' "Nope must've been somebody else." she denied looking him dead in the eyes.
"You know what?" He asked putting his hands on either side of her shoulders, really pinning her in. She licked her lips, feeling like her mouth was a desert. She swallowed trying to get some moisture back. He watched the movement like a predator waiting to strike.
"I asked you a question," he reminded her after a long silence. 'he had?' "What was the question?" she had to clear her throat to get the words out.
"I said, Do you know what?"
"What?" she felt breathless, dizzy, and 'was it hot in here or is it just me?' Her inner voice fanned herself. He leaned in his breath fanning her cheek. His lips brushed her ear as he spoke.
"You're a terrible liar," he leaned back, and walked away.
'What the H-E-Double L was that?' she seethed.
'Forget class,' she marched into the girls room. Turning on the water she cupped her hands once she had a sufficient amount she splashed the ice cold liquid on her face.
"What the crap was that?" she asked out loud. "What am I supposed to do now?" she questioned her reflection. Pacing back and forth she ranted.
"There is only so much one girl can take before she breaks." 'What would breaking entail exactly?' the thought conjured images that made her wanna splash her face again.
The tardy bell rang. "Crap." she gathered her books and ran to her class, hoping that somewhere along the way she'd get an idea of how to handle her dilemma.
