She Lied

"So who are you guys asking to the dance?" Millie asks, eating her lunch with us. I feel my cheeks slightly turn pink as me and Louis make slight eye contact.

The Ball. It's twice a school year. A fall and a spring one. I shrug a little and pop a grape in my mouth.

"I don't know yet... when is it?"

"This Friday."

"WHAT?" I say, nearly choking on her grape, "But it's usually on the 25th!!"

Millie shrugs like it's nothing. Probably because she already has a date. "I mean yeah? But it's not a big deal, I mean you can go with friends."

And that's what I normally do. Go with Jade, Millie, and Eliza. And we normally have a blast. But now Millie is dating Finn, and I am falling for Louis, which leaves the perfect opportunity for Jade and Eliza to go together!

"I mean... yeah I guess I'll go with friends," I sigh, slightly upset that Louis hasn't asked me yet. But in all fairness, I've friend-zoned us several times. All because of Dad.

God it's annoying sometimes.

"Jade you could ask out you know who!" I smile, looking over at her. She shrugged a bit and nodded. "Maybe... and don't worry you can say her name..."

"Eliza!" I say proudly. Millie smiles a bit, "You like Eliza?"

Jade nods and smiles a bit, but doesn't look up from her plate. Noah seemed to be uncomfortable, but Louis, Will and Fin and I didn't see anything off. Jade's been acting different lately. It's been since me and Louis made up in the theater on Saturday.

"That's great! I can help you out if you want?" Millie offered, but she denied.

"It's okay... she's into guys."

Will shrugged and looks at her with a cute little grin, "You can change that for her."

Louis agreed with him, as well as Finn. Noah stayed silent.

"Jade uh can you come with me to dump my tray?" He asked, and I caught an odd expression being passed between them. Jade nodded and stood up, walking to his side of the table. She left her tray.

And at this point I was too suspicious of them to ignore it. After they turn the corner I stand up and follow their trail.

"Avi where you going?" Will calls out, shoving some bread in his mouth. I don't answer.

I just want to know what's going on. And I've known Jade for years. I tell her everything. So why is she hiding something?

Or at least I think she is.

I finally heard them speaking  in the hallway outside of the dining hall.

"I do like Eliza, Noah that part isn't a lie. The lie is that I'd rather go to the dance with Avi instead of her."

"I know... but in all honesty, are you okay? With them getting closer and closer?"

"She's happy with him. Hell she wasn't happy before he came. And she's starting to live instead of spending everyday studying! I can't ruin that!"

"God I'm so sorry... I don't know what to do..."

"Me neither Noah..."

I tuck my head back from around the corner, trying to process what I was hearing. Jade... wants to go to the dance with me?

No no she means it as friends... right? Oh my god what's happening.

"I'll talk to you after school?"

"Yeah... but I don't really wanna go back to lunch. I'm just gonna go to on a walk. Alone."

And then there was silence and some footsteps walking away. I could hear Noah sigh and start walking back to the hall. I quickly step out from my hiding spot and start walking toward him.

"Noah what was that?"

"SHOOT!" He yelled, slapping a hand on my mouth and pulling me around the corner before Jade could see. I looked down at Noah's hand covering my mouth, to his eyes as they peered over the corner to make sure she hadn't seen.

"Mmmmm!" I hummed, signaling for him to let go. He looked back at me and dropped his hand, "Sorry..."

I furrow my brows and whisper. "Noah what the heck was that for?!"

He looked down and shook his head, "Avi what are you doing here?" He said in a whisper.

"What do you think!? She's been acting weird and you did too! And I'm not stupid, you never ask someone to go throw away your extra food with you."

Noah looked to the left and right and then closed his eyes and his head fell backward.

"I can't tell you Avi..."

"Why not?"

"Because... I just can't."

"I tell you everything Noah."

"Just trust me?"

"Does Jade like me?"

He went silent. My eyes grew slightly bigger. "Noah. Does she like me."

He sighed and looked down at his feet. I was beginning to really worry, for not even NOAH would tell me.

"Avi she- she isn't in love with Eliza..."

I shook my head, "No she is! She told me!"

"She lied."

What? No she didn't... Jade doesn't lie to me.

"That's all I can tell you..."

And then he walks away, heading back to our table and leaving me with a trillion questions.

Does Jade like me? And if so... why won't she tell me?
