I'm Not A Babysitter

Jessica had only been gone for a minute but when she returned, Hoodie and Tim were missing. The front door was closed and upon further inspection, Tim's crutches had been left in his bedroom, carelessly discarded on the floor. Jessica wasn't sure where he could have gone without them or if he could have gotten far at all but either way, the two men were missing and she was now left babysitting Skully. Thankfully, he seemed to be happily occupied.

Taking a seat on the couch again, Jessica watched Skully as he held Adam, ear pressed to the cat's back, intently listening to him purr. Adam seemed content to be held, though eventually he grew restless and squirmed his way loose, wandering off the sofa and toward the sliding glass door in the dining room. Parking his round behind on the rug before the glass, Adam tilted his head back over his shoulder to look at Jessica, his way of saying that he wanted out.

"Adam, it's raining," Jessica complained but he simply meowed at her, insisting on going out.

Hearing the noise from the animal, Skully hopped up, dashing into the next room and dropping to his knees before he'd even reached the mat, sliding on his knees across the wood laminate floor. Adam watched him curiously for a moment and Skully stared right back but the animal was quick to return to his badgering of Jessica, meowing more insistently. Glancing between the two, Skully listened to the cat's noises of complaint and Jessica's annoyed rebuttal before he began to make his own noise. It was eerily similar to Adam's meow and sounded just like a cat's cry.

Sitting side by side, Skully and Adam stared back at Jessica, both crying loudly to be released. It was one of the strangest things she had ever seen but she knew better than to question it and with a huff, she stood up again.

"Fine! Fine! You can go out! Are you happy now?"

Both of them grew quiet as the woman approached and as she grabbed the handle to slide the door back, she narrowed her eyes at Adam.

"Stop teaching him bad things," she murmured to the cat before sliding the door back. Adam immediately trotted out onto the soaking wet lawn, not minding the rain in the least. Skully watched him go, glancing up at Jessica before standing up and following the cat out.

As soon as he was outside, Skully froze, feeling the cold rain pelt him. Jessica expected him to come darting back inside and was surprised when he seemed to relax a moment later, happily running across the soft, wet grass. Jessica could hear it squish beneath his feet and she sighed, sliding the door closed to go get two towels. Whenever the two were finished running around in the yard they would both need to be dried off. That was easier said than done though, considering Jessica didn't think she would be able to explain (let alone convince) Skully to put on a dry change of clothes.

When Jessica returned to the dining room with the towels, she glanced out the back door to find Skully flopped down in the mud, laying on his back while the rain poured down on him. She knew he was going to be an absolute disaster as far as washing up went and she wished she had held her ground and not allowed him to go out. Now the damage was done and she watched with dread as Adam came trotting back to the house looking like a drowned rat, Skully pushing himself out of the mud and following at the cat's heels.

When the feline reached the door, Jessica grabbed one of the towels and slid back the glass door, picking Adam up with the towel and wrapping him up, rubbing him down to try and get him as dry as possible before she released him back into the house. Skully waited patiently outside the door, continuing to be rained on as he waited to be allowed into the house.

After scrubbing Adam down with the towel, Jessica let him go with a sigh, watching as he shook himself off and then took off in a frenzied run toward the bedrooms. That could only mean trouble.
