02.|Guardian Angel

"What happened?" "No baby don't move, I'll quickly call the doctor" "Yolanda what happened and why does it hurt so much?" I ask feeling the immense pain that I'm in.

"You've been in an accident but you're alright now, the doctors are on their way so don't worry" she says with so much sadness in her voice.

"Yolanda, where are my parents? Why aren't they here?" I say while on the verge of panicking.

"My legs! Yolanda I can't move my legs! Why can't I move my legs?" I practically shout while slowly feeling the tears stinging my eyes.

"I can't move my legs" but this time it comes out more of a whisper while the tears fall down my face.

"Baby" she says but I can see the the tears in her eyes as she gives me a smile but fails miserably and says "You're going to be fine"

Just as she finishes the doctors quickly rush in. "Why can't I move my legs?" the question automatically bursts from my mouth. "You've had a nerve entanglement in your lower back which caused temporary paralysis. We disentangled the nerve and so now we have to wait for the effect to wear off" he says with a smile on his face.

Bemused by his smile I ask him, the tone coming out harsher than I had intended "Then why can't I move my legs?", he looks at me "It takes time for it to wear off, just be patient, soon you'll be up and running again but you'll be needing physical therapy and trust me that is not going to be a long journey" Dr Marcelo, whose name I later found out says to me.

Before I could ask another question, he quickly excuses himself. Can't hold it anymore I let the tears fall down my face "Alex don't cry now, we'll get through this together okay, we're gonna work hard and we'll get you back to normal. Okay now sweetheart no more tears" she says looking at me hopeful but also seeing the sadness in her eyes.

"Yolanda where are my parents?" I say, frustrated at the thought that they aren't with me at a time I dearly need them the most.

"Look your father was really upset to hear the news and he really wanted to be here with you but he's in the Cayman Islands, work related affairs." With a pang of annoyance in my voice, "As usual it's always work work work"

"Don't be like that now", "I know I should be grateful and all so yeah. What about my mother, where is she?" "Honey she's in Milan planning your father's campaign, but she is sorry for not being here with you" "Fine"

With a shriek in my voice "Yolanda I can feel my toes." Words I thought I would never utter. She looks at me with a smile on her face. "See it will all work out".

I look at her with an outstanding look as to how I managed to get Yolanda in my life, even with the disappointment of my parents never being around, Yolanda keeps my life in order even though it's never easy with me.

I slowly fall asleep and wake up seeing my friends gathered by the sofa all fast asleep. I look at the time and realize that it's already close to midnight. I slowly make my way off the bed to test if my legs can hold me, and I instantly regret it as I take my first step as immense pain shoots up my body as though I've on a hundred pins. As I attempt to stand I quickly come crashing down with a loud thud which awakens my friends.

"Alex" they all cry in unison. "I'm fine", I shrug them off as I want no help from anyone.

"I'm not a cripple, I can do it on my own" I say through gritted teeth. "We know that Alex, we just want you to know that we're here for you that's all" Erin says as she slowly helps me off the ground.

They slowly surround my bed and begin their usual chit-chat. We reminisce on the good times we had and slowly we say our goodbyes as they have school tomorrow.

One month later...

"Just a few more steps Alex", says my physician, Damien. It's been a month now and my walk is almost completely back to normal thanks to all the physical therapy he's been making me do.

"Good job", he says with a smile on his face. "So how do you feel knowing that you'll be released tomorrow?" Damien asks while passing me a bottle of water and a towel to dry myself off.

"You have no idea how great it feels, I'm finally gonna get out of this place and go back to my world of hiding"  "Ouh come on, your life can't be that bad", he says.

"Ouh trust me it is, but somehow I think I'm gonna miss you". He looks at me with his hands to his chest faking hurt and says, "You think? That really stung"

I throw my towel at him and he instantly catches it and laughs along with me. He comes over and sits next to me.

His voice suddenly drops and his tone becomes serious as he says, "Look, I've got a buddy of mine who works at The Vault and I really want you to try it out. It will really help with your recovery."

I look at him befuddled and ask why the vault and why he is doing this for me.

He merely looks at me a sheepish grin and says" I want you to get back to normal and who knows maybe it will be the perfect place for you to get off whatever is on your mind "
" How can you say that, you hardly know me" I say looking even more confused

"Just think of me as your guardian angel. Here's their card, go check them out and who knows maybe it will be of your liking"

He quickly rises, winks at me and walks away leaving me with many questions that I cannot contemplate. I slowly make my way back to my room and decide to turn the ipod that Yolanda had brought along with my headsets. I put on the headsets and go through my playlist and select "In my blood" by Shawn Mendez.

Wandering around the room I let the music take over, not realizing that I was singing out loud. I quickly feel a tap on my shoulder which startles me and there stands Yolanda with a huge smile on her face.

I quickly remove the headsets and she says, "I've always loved to listen to you sing" with a smile on her face. "But I'm no good at it" I say a little embarrassed.

"Phew you stink, did you shower at all?" she says poking at my sides. I look down at my clothes, "I was going to shower but decided to listen to music"

"Okay well go grab a quick shower then come because I have a surprise for you" she says while beaming. I look t her but do as I am told.

From the shower I find that Yolanda has laid out an outfit for me on the bed. I look at her and I guess she coul6see the confusion on my face.

"You're going home, I came to pick you up" she exclaims excitedly. "What, I thought I was leaving tomorrow?" I ask not knowing whether I should squil or not.

"Just get dressed, I've already packed your things for you, this is only the first part of your surprise" she says pretty proud of herself.

I look at her and just nod. I get my jeans, shirt, sneakers and jacket on. I quickly blow dry my hair and set it in a messy ponytail finally ready to leave this place behind.
