Kayla keeps her head bowed as she quickly walks through the trees behind Newt. It is around the end of the afternoon and the sun is just about to set.

He quickly dodges branches and bushes with ease, showing years of practice. Suddenly, he stops. Newt turns to her, pointing to a  small clearing next to a large oak tree.

His words are whispered softly but loudly at the same time, and he drops his hand to his side. "Have a seat." Kayla avoids the boy's gaze and plops down, her sore back leaning against the big tree. Swallowing, she finally notices a horrible pain in her neck. Moving her hand from her lap, Kayla feels her throat. It's swollen. Really swollen. Newt doesn't notice her doing that. If he did, he doesn't want to talk about it.

He sits down next to her, their bodies about a foot apart. The two of them stay silent for a few minutes while the sky starts to grow dark. Finally, Newt speaks. "Listen, I'm sorry that I...avoided...talking to you about the Maze." Kayla folds her arms, sliding down the tree, her shoulders now pressed against the bark and her back laying on the soft, aged grass. Newt turns his head to look at her, but she keeps her gaze on the ground.

"It's really dangerous out there, Greenie-I mean...Kayla..." She stays silent. Newt looks forward again, voice raising as he speaks.

"We call em' Grievers." Kayla raises her head, now facing the bushes ahead of her, suddenly intrigued. "Big, ugly creatures. Half slug thing half machine. Spikes everywhere with needles... their teeth like razors..." She looks at him, but his eyes are looking straight ahead, a distant glint within them. He swallows, tears starting to form on the edges of his water line. "They uh.....they come out during the night after the doors close and um...." He lowers his gaze to his arms, folded across his chest. "If...If you get stung by the bloody things you go through... the Changing." Kayla shakes her head, confusion clotting her brain. "What's that...?" The sky is now a dark navy blue, though no stars glitter on the blank canvas. "The Changing...is...what Gally went through...but you get over it with the serum quite quickly." Newt sighs, blinking slowly. "The serum... you need it... in less that 48 hours or.... things will hapen to your mind."

Kayla felt deep hatred towards Gally, it burned and grew inside of her like a tumor. Newt continued. "I'm not exactly sure you would want to become a Runner." Kayla shifts her body so she is turned to him, criss-crossed and gazing curiously. "Runner?" She leans forward, her elbows pressing against her thighs as she rests her head on her hands. He turns as well, though keeping an appropriate distance from Kayla.

"Yeah, a Runner. They go straight into the Maze when the doors open every morning, mapping the Maze, memorizing every turn and leap, bringing their knowledge back to the Map Room, calculating and recording day after day...week after week.....month after month......" Newt buries his face in his hands and rubs his eyes. Then, Kayla hears something she isn't sure was meant for her ears. Newt whispers "Year after year...this place is bloody hell." Kayla turns away, her back facing him. "I want to change the subject."

Newt sighs, trying to make conversation with her back. "Could you stop being so bloody stubborn?" The emotion building up inside of her explodes and Kayla overreacts and immediately turns defensive, standing up, swinging around, and shoving Newt back.

"Listen, whatever your name is!" She shouts. Newt is struggling to get himself to his feet. "I just got here, don't know who the hell I am, almost got killed by your friend, and NOW you're calling me stubborn?!" Newt finally stands up. Kayla can hear talking and slight shouts from the others as her barking awakens them. Newt places a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down. She raises a fist, wanting to hurt him but also not wanting to do anything to that boy.

All the same, she slams her knuckles into his right shoulder, sending Newt back to the ground, letting out frustrated gasps of pain. Many gladers yell and run towards the trees but she ignores them, sprinting deeper and deeper into the woods.
